07/24/2019 - Under Armour Southwest Championships 17U, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Abel continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and has a promising future on the diamond. On the mound, delivery is sound / repeatable as he shows good tempo through a strong balance point, allowing his arm action to work quick and free to the plate. Arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 81 mph. Fastball shows sinking action. Breaking ball displays 1/7 shape with late break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for pitch with sinking action. Off speed stuff show as quality pitches that will get outs. Control is well above average as he locates well to both sides of the plate. Stock on the mound will rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, hitting / power potential has improved, now showing well above average hitting abilities with solid power potential through a squared / athletic setup. Hands are quick (80 mph exit velocity) and work through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel and utilizes all fields with gap-to-gap pop. In the OF, he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He work to get behind balls and plays through with momentum to his target. Range is a plus as he reads balls well off the bat and covers a lot of ground. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

05/12/2019 - College PREP - San Antonio, TX Abel is an athletic LHP/CF prospect who continues to showcase his skills on the field. On the mound, Abel gathers over the rubber and separates his hands on time. He works with a loose arm and finishes with his chest over his front knee. Abel shows a three pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 77mph with late arm side run. Breaking ball sits from 66-68mph with 1-7 break. Changeup sits from 63-65mph with arm side run and sinking action as he throws with deceptive arm speed. In the field, Abel shows fluid footwork and takes good angles to the ball. He gets into a square position and fields the ball with a firm glove. He gains momentum well on his throws, keeping them accurate with carry through his target. At the plate, this RHH sets up in an athletic stance and takes a square stride. He is smooth getting into his load and drives through well with his lower half. He takes a direct swing with fast bat speed, leading to loud contact and gap to gap pop. Overall, Abel is a solid prospect who has the potential to further progress his skills on the field.

06/17/2017 - Omaha National World Series - Session 1 (Ages 14-18) Abel continues to show a promising future on the diamond. At 1B, he displays smooth / fluid actions. He displays proper footwork around the bag and is a big receiver, displaying clean hands. He works to square ground balls up and makes the routine plays. Glove action is soft but will benefit by presenting more out front. At the plate, he shows an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball to utilize all fields through a line drive approach. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date, topping out at 74 mph. Fastball showed a range of 72-74 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displaying 1/7 shape with gradual break. Control is outstanding as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is gained through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he is extremely coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

03/19/2017 - College PREP - Corpus Christi, TX Abel is a lean, athletic LHP/1B who has a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed is solid as indicated by his 60 time of 7.38. At 1B, he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Glove action is soft / sure and presents well out front. He shows off his athletic abilities on his feeds of the double play. Range is a plus as he moves well laterally, covering ground. At the plate he shows a closed setup. Hands are quick through an aggressive swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 78-71 mph. Breaking ball displays 2/8 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with tailing action but throws too hard with speed variations being too close to fastball. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. With 3 years to further develop, Abel has potential with time and room to progress his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
