Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/OFPosition Projection

06/28/2009 - Team One West 2009 During T1-West, AJ only gave up 1 hit on the mound and went 1-5 at the plate while hitting ball to all fields. On the mound, hit all his spots. Had good mound presence and was able to change speeds effectively. Which showed with hitters going 1-10 off him. Had good balance with the ability to get to his balance point every time. Deception will improve once he keeps his arm speed the same on all pitches. In the OF, had great first step which allowed him to take proper angles to catch/field ball. Got behind fly balls and played thru them effectively. Had good direction and threw the ball downhill. At the plate, showed ability to keep eyes on ball. Had proper balance throughout his swing. Had decent use of lower half which help produced some pull-side power. Keeping hands inside ball will shorten swing. Showed excellent make-up at each position.

06/28/2009 - Team One West 2009 - PVP AJ did a fine job of making his presence felt at the 2009 TeamOne West Showcase. He excelled on the mound and did a fine job as a defensive outfielder. On the hill he showed a good, cutting fastball, touching 88 mph on the radar gun. His command on his curveball and change up were good as he threw them with effectiveness. His arm stoke showed a slight pause in it, perhaps causing him to miss up at times. With some polish and smoothening, he may gain better location with all pitches, giving him the ability to pitch at the knees, consistently with all three pitches. Overall, AJ shows a projectable body and an even greater enthusiasm for the game, which did not go unnoticed by many college coaches in attendance.

06/03/2009 - Under Armour Southeast Regional Tournament - 2009 AJ was a great leader on his team and increased his 60 time during the event. In the OF and INF, showed above average arm at each position that was accurate to target during drills. Had good instincts with above average athleticism. Was able to make all the routine plays. At the plate, was athletic and strong with ability to square up balls and hit to all fields. Had compact swing with good bat speed and consistent barrel accuracy that led to gap power. Keeping head still will allow him to recognize pitches sooner. On the mound, had good presence and was not afraid to compete. Showed good glove side lead with loose actions. Showed good rhythm and balance throughout which allowed for consistency. Staying back will allow him to utilize his lower half explosion.

01/16/2009 - Under Armour Pre-Season All America - 2009 AJ continues to show steady improvement in his baseball abilities. He ran his best 60 time to date at 7.34 and also showed his improved foot speed in his home to 1B time at 4.86. At the plate, abilities continue to shine as he was 3 for 6 with a 2B to RF and 3B to deep CF at the event as he utilized the entire field. On the mound, command and control has improved the most. He attacks hitters and works to get ahead with all his pitches. Arm action and arm strength will continue to improve through a strict long toss program. Goetz will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches and could be a two way player.

12/27/2008 - Under Armour Recruiting Classic 2008 AJ continues to show as a two way player and currently does project well at both positions. He has really improved his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved, cutting 4 tenths off his 60 time, now a 7.42 runner. He is aggressive with his feet on his approach in taking proper routes and angles in tracking down balls in the outfield. He shows good instincts with proper footwork. Arm strength is above average but does need to get on a strict long toss program to continue to aid in developing more arm strength. He is a solid defensive outfielder. At the plate, Goetz displays power to all fields, showing a solid feel for the barrel. He is a clutch hitter as he went 5 for 9 with 3 doubles at the event. He will hit at the next level. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he topped out at 85 mph. He utilizes his long arms well with extension to the plate. Off speed pitches are solid and he works ahead of hitters, mixing pitches well. With a projectable arm and body, AJ has a great future ahead of him in the game of baseball. He has the makings to be a solid player at the next level.

09/14/2008 - College PREP - Parker, CO Alex is a young two way player on the mound and in the outfield. Currently, he projects best in the outfield where he has above average tools in the field and at the plate. Body is tall and slender with a ton of projection as it continues to fill out. Arm strength is above average displaying life, carry, and accuracy from a plus arm slot. He takes proper routes and angles in working to get behind fly balls and plays through with momentum to target. He is light on his feet but does need to increase foot speed for the next level. At the plate, Goetz continues to shine displaying near above average ability with above average power. He loads up well and transfers weight from the backside into a firm front, generating power. Keeps hands inside the baseball utilizing all fields with power the other way. He has a solid idea at the plate. On the mound, Alex has an upside. Fastball displays sink with occasional arm side run. Breaking ball is solid average displaying a 12/6 shape with tight spin and above average depth. Changeup is his best off speed pitch showing near above average with a solid feel for and fading action. Delivery is repeatable displaying a solid balance point with direction and tempo. With 2 years to further develop, Goetz will catch the eyes of the college coaches and could be a two way player.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
