Official Scouting Report

  • 2B/RHPPosition Projection

10/15/2014 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic Alex continues to show as MIF/RHP at the event. In the MIF, feet are quick / active as he works to square balls up, moves well to glove side, and displays soft / clean hands. He attacks ground balls and plays through well with his body while presenting hands out front and shows big play potential in the MIF. At the plate, he shows a squared / athletic setup with balance. Hands are quick, generating bat speed and work through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side. Hitting grade will continue to improve as he works to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all. At the event, he was 2 for 4 with 5 BB as he displays a solid eye and patient approach at the plate. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 78-80 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with late break. He maintains arm speed arm speed on changeup with sinking action. Off speed stuff show potential as being quality out pitches at the next level. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a great attitude is very coachable and plays the game hard.

05/25/2013 - College PREP - Salt Lake City, UT Alex is a tall and lanky 2-way player as a SS/RHP. Defensively at SS is where he shines. He shows quick and fluid footwork, moving around the ground ball well and fielding with soft hands. He shows plus range with the ability to make the difficult play in the hole. Working on quickening his DP turns will help as he continues to advance and play against faster runners. Offensively, this right-handed hitter displays a tall setup and short stride. His has a middle of the field approach but has the ability to use the whole field. Smoother rhythm will help him get into a loaded position and increase pop off of the bat. On the mound, Johnson has a 3-pitch mix and fills up the zone, throwing strikes with every pitch. He uses his lower 1/2 well and drives off of the mound. He throws a CB and sinker which are both good off-speed pitches. Continuing to increase his arm strength will help velos to rise. Alex is young (2016 grad) and has a solid skill-set yet still has a lot of time to improve his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
