10/08/2014 - Arizona Senior Fall Classic Alex showed improvement at his most recent Baseball Factory outing. He topped out at 83 with his FB, broke off a nasty 12-6 CB and threw a loose/effective CH. He works with good tempo and has the ability to control the running game with his 1.15 to home time from the stretch. He fills up the zone with strikes and attacks hitters early giving him the advantage. Working on pounding the low zone, throwing his CH more and developing a 3rd pitch. At SS, he showed consistent/efficient actions and was able to make the routine play easily. Concentrating on a quicker exchange, patience when receiving DP feeds and working on different arm slots will improve Alex's defensive game. At the plate, he worked to the pull side with pop. Staying balanced more and recognizing pitches will only help his hitting abilities. Alex will impress some coaches in his final season with the help of these adjustments.

05/24/2014 - College PREP - Salt Lake City, UT Alex continues to shine on the diamond. On the bump, FB now tops out at 84 mph as he works it to both sides of the plate. He keeps hitters off balance with his deceptive delivery. Changeup is thrown with FB arm speed as it shows to be good out pitch. In the OF, Alex takes good angles and works into position behind the fly-ball. He plays through the ball well and has a strong arm. With the bat, he squares the ball up consistently, connecting and driving it. A talented player who is approaching his senior year - Alex will find success on the diamond.

12/27/2013 - Under Armour Baseball Factory Recruiting Classic Alex is a hardworking young man with positive makeup on and off the field. He continues to show as a SS/RHP and has improved his baseball abilities but currently projects best on the mound for the next level. Delivery is sound / repeatable allowing his arm action to work loose / free to the plate through a low 3/4 arm slot. Arm strength has improved as he threw his op velocity to date, topping out at 84 mph. Fastball showed a range of 79-84 mph with plus arm side run. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with late breaking action and show potential as being a quality pitch. Command / control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. At SS, foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. He utilizes his feet well in his lateral movement, displaying range and attacks balls with his feet, playing through well. Hands are soft / clean but needs to present more out front to continue to improve defensive grade. Throws are accurate, flashing carry but will benefit by getting rid of the baseball quicker. At the plate, he shows a balanced setup with rhythm. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel and makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side. Hitting grades will continue to improve as he learns to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. Power numbers improving as he learns to use his lower half more.

05/25/2013 - College PREP - Salt Lake City, UT Alex is an athletic 2-way player as a SS/RHP. Defensively at SS, he maintains active footwork and puts himself into a good fielding position. He shows some good athleticism and plus range to his glove side. He has a quick exchange and makes accurate throws across the diamond. At the plate, Alex gets the barrel through the zone quickly and uses his lower 1/2 well. He shows some pop to his pull-side and uses the whole field. Keeping his head in will help to increase consistency at the plate. On the mound, this RHP has a 3-pitch mix. FB ranges from 81-82 mph and shows some run. CH shows fade and is best off-speed pitch. With some fine tuning of his mechanics, Alex has a lot of potential on the bump. Nielsen is only a 2015 graduate and should continue to improve his game as he still has a couple of years to do so.

05/26/2012 - College PREP - Salt Lake City, UT Alex is a young SS that will graduate in 2015. Defensively, feet are active displaying good range to his glove and backhand side. Alex shows good presentation of his glove and is consistent with his throws. Fielding and arm grades will improve as he works on staying low out of his fielding position to throw with shorter footwork. His arm shows promise with his velocity toping out at 78 mph. Alex can benefit from a speed and agility program to increase foot speed. At the plate, Alex shows a square setup with the ability to spray the ball to all fields. Contact is consistent allowing the ball to travel and get deep. Hitting/power grades will improve as he learns to drive his lower half through and develops better balance. With 3 years of further development, Alex shows abilities with plenty of room for growth and improvement.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
