01/17/2014 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament Alex is a solid two-way player between pitcher and shortstop. On the mound is where Alex truly shines. He has good tempo and uses all parts of the plate to get hitters out. His best pitch is his 89 mph fastball that has good arm side run and on a downward plane. This pitch is extremely tough for hitters to square up and make solid contact. Coupled with his fastball is his curveball with 11-8 shape. This pitch is 12+ mph different from his fastball, a devastating drop for hitters to handle. A third pitch Alex has good feel for his his change-up, which also has arm side run as he keeps his arm speed and angle the same. Where Alex can improve his stock on the mound would be to separate his hands a little earlier, keeping balls lower in the zone, and increasing his stamina so he is able to go deep into games while not dropping too many mph's from his pitches. At shortstop, Alex takes good routes with his active feet and picks the best hop to field the ball on. He works through all grounders and has a clean transfer and exchange, providing good double play feeds and throws to his target across the diamond. Not standing up to throw and using his lower half more in his throws should improve defensive grades. At the plate Alex is a contact hitter with good opposite field technique. Engaging his lower half and extending through the ball at contact should help hitting grades. Overall, Alex is best suited for RHP at the next level where he will get a lot of coaches' looks, but certainly possesses the ability to be a two-way guy.
