11/18/2012 - National Tryout - Germantown (Memphis), TN In Alex's most recent Factory outing, he showed great improvement in his hitting ability. At the dish, he showed a good balanced setup, smooth load, short/square stride and full use of his lower half. Alex made consistent contact with decent bat speed. He can continue to improve his hitting by shortening his swing, being more on-time, and learning contact points. Defensively, he has good hip flexion, displays an early target, and showed good catch & hold ability. He tracks the ball well and deadens balls while blocking. Implementing a throwing/long toss program will help to improve his arm strength and use of his lower half with his throws. Overall, Alex continues to show improvement to his game, and as he continues to physically mature, will be a good prospect when his time comes along in 2016.

07/27/2012 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City Alex Shipman is a 2016 graduate who catches and plays the outfield. In the outfield Alex has quick and active footwork, has an athletic fielding position, and shows playable range. When he really works through it, he shows an above average arm from the outfield. Behind the plate Alex continues to show as a very good catcher. He receives with firm hands, has an athletic and flexible set up, centers the ball when blocking, and has a quick release. At the plate he has an athletic and balanced set up, a sound load, and a squared stride. He uses his lower half well and shows stable balance during his swing. He has a nice fluid swing allowing him to have good timing and he showed a good idea at the plate during the games. He was 4 for 9 with a couple extra base hits and 3 runs driven in during the camp. Alex has a great attitude and wants to learn. With his athleticism he will only get stronger with age.

05/27/2012 - College PREP - Lebanon (Nashville), TN Alex is a young catcher that will graduate in 2016. Feet are active as he works in line to his target through a clean transfer / exchange. He gets rid of the baseball quickly with accuracy on his throws. Pop times are excellent for his age, showing a range of 2.14 - 2.26 with times lowering as he builds more arm strength. Receiving / blocking skills are quality tools that will play well at the next level. He shows an athletic setup with soft hands and shows off his athletic abilities through the blocking process. At the plate, Shipman shows a balanced approach with rhythm. Swing path is level and he shows a solid feel for the barrel, mainly to the pull side. For hitting grades to improve, he needs to work to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. Power numbers will continue to improve as he adds more overall body strength. With 4 years to further develop, Alex has a lot of potential with the makings to be a solid player as he continues to get more reps and improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
