01/17/2020 - 2020 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Alex is a tall RHP/3B prospect who showed well at the Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament. On the mound, Alex gathers over the rubber and works with a loose arm. He stays inline towards the plate and finishes with his chest over his front knee. Alex shows a three pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 82mph with cutting action. Breaking ball sits from 66-69mph with 11-5 break. Changeup sits from 66-69mph with arm side run as he throws with deceptive arm speed. In the field, Alex shows efficient footwork and gets into a square position. He fields with sure hands and makes a clean exchange, keeping his throws accurate with good backspin through his target. At the plate, this RHH sets up in a tall stance and takes a controlled stride. He gets into his load and tracks the ball well, producing solid line drives to all fields. Overall, Alex is a talented prospect who has the potential to contribute at the next level.

08/18/2019 - College PREP - Providence, RI Alex showed good athleticism and a tall/lean frame during his last workout in Providence. At 3rd base, Alex covers ground through fluid/active feet. He has a soft glove, fields in a low/square position, and his arm is accurate and consistent across the diamond. On the mound, Alex has good balance over the rubber and his arm is free and clean. He gets good extension on his pitches, he has a controlled landing toward home, and he finishes in a complete position. Offensively, Alex stands in athletically and shows fast bat speed. He works the middle of the field, swings in good rhythm, and he uses his lower body.

10/17/2018 - Arizona Junior Fall Classic Alex continues to show a bright future on the diamond. At 3B, he displays smooth / athletic actions. Feet are aggressive in attacking balls and he plays through with his body. Glove action is soft / sure and presents well out front. He moves well laterally and shows a solid backhand. Range will continue to improve as he improves foot quickness. At the plate, he continues to shine through an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through a short / direct swing path as he stays inside the ball utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 79 mph. Fastball showed a range of 77-79 mph with tailing action. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with slight tail. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a great attitude and is very coachable as he works hard to be the best player he can be.

06/10/2018 - National Tryout Plus - Medford (Boston), MA Alex continues to shine on the diamond with improvements in his baseball abilities. At 3B, defensive abilities are now well above average as he displays fluid / smooth actions. Feet are active as he works to square balls up and plays through with his body. Glove action is soft and he presents well, utilizing two hands through the process. At the plate, he continues to shine through a squared setup. He has fluid rhythm while getting good hand separation. Barrel is whipped (83 mph exit velocity) through the zone with gap-to-gap pop. On the mound, delivery is sound / repeatable allowing his arm action to work free to the plate. He shows good tempo through a strong balance point and throws from a ¾ arm slot. Fastball showed a range of 76-77 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. Changeup shows good arm side run but slows arm speed, tipping off pitch to hitters. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program.

10/04/2017 - Arizona Sophomore Fall Classic Alex is an athletic, projectable two-way player who plays the game hard. On the hill, this RHP has a quick arm that makes it easy to see the upside in his stuff, which already has good action. He gets natural tail on his fastball (topping out at 78 mph) and good tilt on the curve. Changeup is thrown with FB arm speed helping to create deception as it shows to be a solid 'K' pitch. He repeats well and pounds the zone, not giving many free passes while giving his defense a chance. At 3B, he shows active prep and is ready for anything hit his way. His feet are quick and fluid as he moves well laterally to field low and athletically. He has soft, quick hands and is able to field and get rid of the ball in no time to make strong, accurate throws and feeds. As a hitter, his strength and balance are assets at the plate as he stays quiet and always seems to be in position to make hard contact. He extends through the ball to make hard contact and spray line drives to all fields. Alex (2020 grad) is an emerging talent with lots of ability and upside.

06/04/2017 - College PREP - Medford (Boston), MA Alex continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities with a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. At the plate is where he has improved the most, now displaying outstanding hitting abilities with well above average power potential through an athletic setup. Hands are quick (81 mph exit velocity) and work through an aggressive approach. He has strength in his swing and shows a plus feel for the barrel with gap-to-gap pop. At 3B, defensive abilities have improved as he displays smooth / clean actions. Feet are active as attacks balls and plays through well with his body. Glove action is soft / sure and he presents well out front. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 77 mph. Fastball showed a range of 76-77 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with late / sharp break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with arm side run. Off speed stuff show as quality pitches that will get outs at the next level. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program.

07/29/2016 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 Alex continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities with a tremendous future on the diamond. He has a big upside on the mound through a projectable body. Arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 78 mph. Fastball shows a range of 70-78 mph with cutting action as he hides the ball well. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with tailing action. Getting on a long toss program will help to increase arm strength which will aid in his development on the mound. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and plays the game hard. At 2B, feet are active / aggressive as he attacks balls and plays through a low approach while presenting glove well out front. Hands / feet work well together through the fielding process. He shows off his athletic abilities on his feeds / turns of the double play. Defensive grade will continue to improve as he increases foot quickness. At the plate he shows an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing the whole field, gap to gap. With 4 years to further develop, Alex has the makings of a special type player with time and room to continue to progress his game.

12/27/2015 - Baseball Factory Winter Classic - Session 2 Alex competed very well at the Baseball Factory Winter Classic as both a pitcher and a third basemen. Defensively at the hot corner, he worked to the baseball with body control and played through to throw with a plus arm across the diamond. He worked to promote his hands further in front and should continue to work on bending more at his knees to field. Offensively, he showed an aggressive approach and exploded the barrel to the baseball with his hands & hips working together. His rhythm in his move was very solid and he stayed inside the ball at contact. On the hill, he threw his FB with arm side run, and spun an 11/5 CB. His arm action was very clean and he worked ahead of hitters. All in all - Alex should continue to work and add strengths to his already sound game play.

07/24/2015 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 Alex is a quiet competitor who works hard every day. With the bat, he maintains solid balance with rhythm in his hands. Bat speed is quick as he fires it through the zone, connecting with pop. Shortening his stride (avoiding to lung at the ball) will help to engage his full lower 1/2 which will result in even more power at the plate. At 3B, Smith has clean/smooth actions and works well into a square fielding position. He fields the ball with soft hands, gathers well, and gains ground toward his target at 1B. On the mound, this RHP has fluid actions and maintains quick tempo, not letting hitters get settled. He gets good glove-side lead and drives his lower 1/2 downhill off of the rubber. FB has late run and will get in on the RHH. He pounds the zone and attacks hitters. Curveball has 11/5 shape with tight spin (62-63 mph). Continuing to develop more arm strength through a long toss program will aid in both his development at 3B as well as on the mound. Only a 2020 grad - Alex has a solid skill-set that will only continue to progress.

06/30/2015 - Interactive Video Program - Rindge, NH Alex is a young (2020 grad) 2-way player as a RHP/3B. On the bump, this righty has a 3-pitch mix coming from a 3/4 arm slot and clean arm action. He works to a tall balance point and keeps his eyes on the target working in-line toward the dish. FB ranges from 69-73 mph as he pounds the zone with strikes. Breaking ball has 11/5 shape with tight spin while changeup has some tail. At 3B, Smith works well into a square fielding position. He funnels smoothly and has a clean exchange to throw, gaining ground toward his target. With the bat, this RHH has an aggressive approach looking to swing it. He takes a hack with bat speed and connects with pop. Overall abilities in his game will improve with work on the following.

1. Arm strength (long toss)
2. Glove side lead
3. Finish with extension
Infield
1. More pre-pitch footwork
2. Glove presentation

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
