Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • LHP/1BPosition Projection

05/22/2016 - National Tryout Plus - San Antonio, TX This projectable lefty continues to progress. On the mound, he works to a tall balance point and has smooth separation, driving in-line toward the plate. FB shows some arm side run as he works it in and out. Breaking ball shows 2/8 shape with gradual action. Working to stay on top of it will help to improve action. More lower 1/2 drive off of the rubber will help to get more into his FB. At 1B, Matt is aggressive and comes to get the GB. He works into a square fielding position, tracks the ball into a soft mitt and gathers well. Offensively, he has rhythm to load and remains selective waiting for a pitch he likes. He whips the barrel with speed and connects with strength (exit velocity = 83 mph) driving the ball on a line. Matt has a ton of upside and should find success as he approaches his senior year.

07/30/2015 - Baseball Factory Pro Select Training & Tournament at Historic Dodgertown Matt continues to show steady play in his baseball abilities. At 1B, he displays proper foot work around the bag and is a quality receiver. Feet are active as he works to square balls up as he presents hands out front. He moves well laterally, flashing range. At the plate, he shows a squared/athletic setup and an aggressive approach. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing and makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side. For hitting grade to continue to improve, he needs to work to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to use his lower half more. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 68-73 mph. Breaking ball displays 2/8 shape with gradual break. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable.

05/31/2015 - College PREP - San Antonio, TX Matt is a L/L 2-way player LHP/1B who has a tall/projectable build (6'2"/185). On the bump, this lefty has a 3-pitch mix coming from a high 3/4 arm slot and free/clean arm action. He works to a controlled balance point, maintains level shoulders and works in-line toward the dish. FB shows slight run while ranging fro 68-70 mph. Breaking ball has 1/7 shape (66-68 mph). Working to stay on top of his breaking ball will help to improve break and effectiveness. At 1B, Matt shows efficient footwork as he gets into a square fielding position behind the GB. He has good bag awareness and makes adjustments to inaccurate throws. With the bat, this LHH displays a balanced setup with a good base. Swing path is level as he connects and drives the ball to all parts of the field. Only a 2017 grad - Herrera should find success on the diamond.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
