Official Scouting Report

  • RHPPosition Projection

01/13/2017 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Andrew is an effective RHP who commands the zone and mixes his pitches well. FB topped out at 81 mph with good arm side run. He commands the zone and paints the corners. Breaking ball has 11/5 shape and is sharp with good action. Changeup is thrown with FB arm speed which helps to create deception. He has sound mechanics and repeats his delivery well. Atherton is a reliable righty who will toe the rubber and give his team a chance to succeed.

12/27/2016 - Under Armour Baseball Factory Recruiting Classic Andrew showed on the mound and at 2B for the first time at the event. He continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Hands are quick (81 mph exit velocity) and work through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing with power showing best to the pull side. Lower half works well through the swing and shows a feel for the barrel. In the MIF, he moves well laterally, displaying range. Feet are aggressive as he attacks balls and plays through well with his body. Glove action is soft/sure but will benefit by presenting more out front. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 79-81 mph with tailing action. Breaking ball displays 1/7 shape with late/sharp break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with sinking action. Off speed stuff, show as quality pitches that will get outs at the next level. Control is well above average as he throws strikes with all his pitches. He shows good poise and competes on the bump. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable, wants to learn, and works hard to be the best player he can be.

09/11/2016 - College PREP - La Verne (Los Angeles), CA Andrew is a lean RHP who will graduate in 2017. On the bump, this righty throws a 3-pitch mix coming from a high 3/4 arm slot and loose/free arm action. He works through a strong balance point and has smooth overall actions. FB ranges from 78-81 mph with tailing action. Breaking ball is outstanding displaying 11/5 shape with late/sharp break. Arm speed is maintained on changeup but he needs to develop more movement with the pitch. Control is outstanding as he attacks hitters, throwing strikes with all his pitches. Getting on a long toss program will help to increase arm strength which will aid in his development on the mound. Andrew has a lot of potential with time and room to progress his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
