Official Scouting Report

  • CPosition Projection

05/05/2019 - College PREP - Bryan (College Station), TX Andrew is a strong C prospect who continues to showcase his skills on the field. Behind the plate, Andrew moves efficiently to block and receives with soft hands. He makes a clean exchange and gains momentum well on his throws, keeping them consistent with carry through the 2B bag. At the plate, this RHH sets up in a closed stance with center balance. He is fluid getting into his load and drives through well with his lower half. He gets good extension through ball, leading to loud contact and line drives. Overall, Andrew is a solid prospect who has the potential to contribute at the next level.

06/17/2017 - Omaha National World Series - Session 1 (Ages 14-18) Andrew showed on the mound and in the OF for the first time at the event. He continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and has a promising future on the diamond. At the plate, power potential has improved, displaying solid hitting abilities with well above average power potential. He has strong/centered balance with fluid rhythm to load. Hands are quick (85 mph exit velocity) and work through a level swing path with lower half working well through the swing. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields with gap-to-gap pop. In the OF, he takes a quick first step and moves lightly on the balls of his feet. Range is a plus as reads balls well off the bat and covers a lot of ground. Transfer is smooth with strong throws through his cut off. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date. Fastball showed a range of 73-75 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with tailing action. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is gained through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a great personality, is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

12/04/2016 - College PREP - Crowley, TX Andrew is a solid (6'0"/200) 2-way player as a RHP/OF. On the mound, this righty has a 3-pitch mix coming from a 3/4 arm slot. He works to a controlled balance point, keeps his eyes on the target and repeats well. FB tops out at 75 mph while breaking ball shows 10/4 shape. Changeup is thrown with FB arm speed while it has some tail & sink. Working to reach back and extend his arm action along with finishing with more extension will help to improve effectiveness on the mound. In the OF, Cates shows active footwork as he is aggressive to track down fly-balls. He secures the ball with 2-hands, has a clean exchange and works through the ball gaining ground toward his target. With the bat, this RHH shows a square/athletic setup with a solid base. He whips the barrel, squares the ball up and creates good extension on the finish. Relaxing/loosening his grip will allow for more bat whip and increased pop off of the barrel. Only a 2020 grad - Andrew has a ton of talent with upside on the diamond.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
