05/25/2013 - Little League® Experience - S. Williamsport Austin is a young player who is very coachable and enjoys being in the big spot. Defensively, he has soft hands behind the plate and a good short release with good carry on his throws. He is a durable kid who makes a good target. He can work on his transfer and footwork and throwing downhill to second base. His size/big frame and his soft hands make for an easy transition to first base. On the mound, Austin competes and does a good job of challenging hitters. He does a good job working down in the zone when he separates early and follows through. When he rushes through his balance point his arm drags, and he misses up in the zone. Offensively, he has power potential and an aggressive swing with a good lower half. His stance is athletic and his bat is on-plane through the zone. He is often out on his front foot and pulling the ball. When he thinks opposite field his balance is better. He also has a tendency to let go of the bat with his top hand very early. Overall, Austin is a gamer with a big upside as he continues to polish his raw ability.

05/26/2012 - Little League® Experience Austin is a big/strong 2018 graduate who plays C and is a RHP. He throws over the top, he has a quick release, he is accurate to his target and has good arm strength. Austin has soft/sure hands, receives well and he has a quick release. He needs to widen his stance, catch the ball out front more (he is too deep), use his body to block and work on his footwork. On the mound he showed good arm action, decent velocity and he throws strikes. He tends to wrap his arm on the backside and his direction is all over the place (needs to stay in-line to his target). At the plate Austin showed big upside. He has an athletic setup, short/square stride, he has a level swing and plus power. He needs to keep flex in his lead arm on load (he bars his arm), use his lower half more consistently, let the ball travel into the proper hitting zone and develop an overall smoother approach. Austin is a very good hitter right now, if he makes these adjustments and can consistently apply them he will be a stand-out hitter in the future. Austin is a great kid, he hustles and works hard. He has very good potential and if he makes the adjustments he will be an exceptional player.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
