Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 1B/LHPPosition Projection

01/17/2020 - 2020 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Austin is an athletic 1B/LHP prospect who showed well at the Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament. In the field, Austin shows active footwork and fields the ball out in front with sure hands. He makes a clean exchange and gains ground well on his throws, keeping them accurate with backspin through his target. At the plate, this LHH sets up in a square stance and takes a square stride. He is on time getting into a simple load and is explosive driving his lower half through. He takes a smooth swing with fast bat speed, leading to loud contact to all fields. On the mound, Austin gathers over the rubber and separates his hands on time. He works with a clean arm and accelerates through his release, staying inline towards the plate. Austin shows a three pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 86mph. Breaking ball sits from 64-69mph with 12-6 break. Changeup sits at 63mph. Overall, Austin is a talented prospect who has the skill set to contribute at the next level.

10/23/2019 - Under Armour SoCal Classic, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Austin continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities and he is a top prospect on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. At 1B, defensive abilities are now well above average as he shows active footwork and presents his glove out front to field. Feet are active as he displays proper footwork around the bag and he is a quality receiver. He has a quick release and allows his throws to remain accurate and carry through his target. At the plate, hitting abilities are outstanding with tremendous power potential through a crouch setup. He is smooth getting into his load and comes through the zone well with his lower half. He takes a direct swing to the ball with fast bat speed (88 mph exit velocity) which leads to hard contact with gap-to-gap pop. He had a tremendous event at the plate, going 7 for 8 with 3 2B. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 87 mph. Fastball showed a range of 82-87 mph with solid arm side run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with late / sharp break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup and shows a feel for pitch with sinking action. Off speed stuff show as quality pitches that will get outs. Control is outstanding as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a great personality, is very coachable and has solid leadership traits. Austin has the makings of a special type player and will get looks from the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities, possibly as a two-way guy.

07/16/2019 - College PREP - Highland Park (DFW), TX Austin is a lean LHP/1B who has a promising future on the diamond. At the plate is where he shows best, displaying outstanding hitting / power potential through a squared, athletic setup. Hands are quick (85 mph exit velocity) and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball and shows a feel for the barrel with gap-to-gap pop. At 1B, he displays smooth / clean actions. Feet are active and he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Glove action is soft /sure and presents well out front. Range will increase as he improves and he increases foot quickness. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 84-86 mph. Breaking ball displays 2/8 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for pitch with sinking action. Control is well above average as he throws strikes with all his pitches. With 2 years to further develop, Austin has the makings of a special type player and will get looks from the collegiate coaches, possibly as a two-way guy.

11/16/2013 - Interactive Video Program - Houston, TX Austin is a young, athletic, 1st baseman who hits from the left side. Defensively, Austin has a controlled approach, playable hands, and he funnels the ball in well. He fields out front, his exchange is clean, and he throws with a medium arm action to his target. Offensively, Austin has an upright set-up, a square stride, and a level swing. He makes solid contact, has pop to the pull side, and he gets proper extension through the ball. Overall abilities can improve with work on the following.

Defense
1. Attack ball aggressively
2. Backhand
3. Long toss
Offense
1. Let ball travel
2 Shorten swing
3. More direct hands to ball

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
