06/19/2017 - National Tryout - Katy (Houston), TX Austin is an athletic prospect who continues to improve on the diamond. On the mound, Austin gathers over the rubber and separates his hands on time. Arm action is clean as he extends through on his release. He strides directly towards the plate and finishes square to his target. Austin shows a three pitch mix with his fastball now topping out at 77mph with good arm side tail. Breaking ball ranges from 64-66mph with 11-4 break. His best pitch is his knuckleball which sits from 69-71mph with good sinking action. Austin can improve as a pitcher by quickening the tempo in his delivery. At the plate, this LHH sets up in a tall, open stance and is fluid getting back into his load. He takes a direct swing to the ball with explosive bat speed which leads to hard line drives and gap to gap power. Austin can improve as a hitter by striding square to the pitcher and by using his lower half more. Overall, Austin is a solid prospect who has the potential to contribute at the next level.

02/26/2017 - College PREP - Waco, TX Austin is an athletic SS/RHP who has a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed is outstanding as indicated by his 60 time of 6.97. In the MIF, defensive abilities are solid as he displays clean/fluid actions. Feet are aggressive as he attacks balls and presents a soft/sure glove well out front. He shows off his athletic abilities on his turn/feeds of the double play. Range is a plus as he moves well laterally and covers a lot of ground. At the plate, he shows an athletic setup. Hands are quick (87 mph exit velocity) and work through an aggressive swing path with late explosion. He has strength in his swing and works to stay inside the ball with gap-to-gap pop. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. On the mound, delivery is sound/repeatable allowing his arm action to work free to the plate. He shows good tempo through a strong balance point. Fastball showed a range of 73-76 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup with arm side run. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Austin has a lot of potential with time and room to progress his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
