01/26/2014 - College PREP - San Diego, CA Austin continues to shine on the diamond. This strong LH hitter gets back into a strong loaded position, waiting for his pitch. Barrel delivery is quick/compact as he fires he hands and drives his backside. He connects with the ball and drives it to the gaps with pop. Behind the dish, Owen presents a low target and tracks the ball into the zone. Quick footwork and a clean exchange result in strong/accurate throws down to 2B. This solidly built (6'0"/175lbs) backstop will get looks to extend his playing career as he is a talented prospect.

06/22/2013 - Omaha National World Series - Session 2 Austin has improved his catch and throw abilities behind the plate as he threw his best pop time to date at 1.99. He works in line through a through a clean transfer / exchange as he works to get rid of the baseball quickly. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Receiving / blocking skills show as quality tools that will play well at the next level through an athletic setup. At the plate, he displays quick hands and a solid feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off his bat when centered. Mental makeup is a plus as he works hard, displays a positive attitude and is very coachable.

03/17/2013 - National Tryout - Carson, CA In Austin's latest Factory outing, he showed more consistency within his pop times - ranging from 2.12 - 2.24. Behind the dish, he sits athletically and receives well with an ability to stick the low ball. His feet are active and he has a quick/clean exchange with flashes of life out of the hand. Austin centers balls to block with a soft chest, and is quick to recover. A throwing/long toss program will help his pop times drop around the 2.0 mark. Offensively, he swings from the left side with good rhythm and decent bat speed. He has a short swing path and a contact approach. When he begins to use his lower half productively, he'll flash some more pop. In all, the 6'/175 lbs prospect projects well as a backstop with continuous work.

09/09/2012 - College PREP - Azusa, CA Austin is a athletic catcher who will graduate in 2014. Behind the plate, Austin displays sure hands with agile range. Blocking, Austin centers the ball with consistency and shows a soft body. His hands are very soft when receiving and works back to the zone. He can work on a stronger stance when receiving. Throws are accurate with his feet in line but can focus on gaining more ground. At the plate, Austin displays good balance, he gets his hands back but needs to makes sure his lead arm does not bar. His lower half gets through well and his swing path is on plane. Hitting grades will improve with a stronger top hand and more flex in his lead arm. With two years to further develop, Austin shows abilities with room for improvement in his overall baseball skills.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
