Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 1B/RHPPosition Projection

08/27/2017 - College PREP - Avon (Cleveland), OH Austin is a talented 1B/RHP prospect who has a versatile skill set and graduates in 2019. In the field, Austin plays with active footwork and an aggressive approach showing good range in each direction laterally. He has the proper footwork and fields the ball in a square position with a firm glove. Austin has a clean exchange leading into a short arm action throwing from an over the top arm slot. He plays with good momentum through the baseball showing consistently strong, online throws across the diamond. Offensively, Austin has a tall, open stance with a firm front side and centered balance. He has a fluid rhythm with a smooth load and on-time stride. Austin gets good extension at contact consistently landing the barrel to the baseball producing square contact. He has a middle of the field approach with good potential for power. On the mound, Austin has an on-time delivery throwing from a 3/4 arm slot. He extends through his release and has a controlled landing. He does a nice job rotating towards his target as he finishes. Austin has good run on his fastball and a deceptive changeup. He also features a developing curveball. Overall, Austin has a well-rounded skill set with an effective approach giving him upside to take his skills to the next level.

08/03/2014 - National Tryout - Dublin (Columbus), OH Austin continues to work hard on his game. With the bat, this RHH shows a balanced approach as he gets back into a loaded position and tracks the ball into the zone. He delivers the barrel with strength, connecting and driving the ball. More lower 1/2 drive will help to increase power. At 1B, he presents his glove out in front and fields it cleanly. He gathers well and has a clean exchange. On the bump, this RHP works in-line toward the dish. He fills up the zone and throws strikes. Austin is only a 2019 grad and has a lot of time to develop his skills.

11/14/2013 - Baseball Factory Select Training & Competition at Pirate City Austin is a smart, two-way player who understands the game very well. As an infielder, Austin makes the routine play, moves well, and understands situations. He works through the ball well and has a quick release and will continue to improve his lateral quickness and fielding position. As a hitter, Austin is a contact type hitter who can use the whole field to his advantage. Austin is very coachable, rises to the challenge and will become an improved hitter as he works on staying through the ball and centering his balance through his swing.

09/21/2013 - Infield Accelerated Training Weekend (Ages 12-14) Austin is a young middle infielder that shows the potential to be a leader. He communicates well when on the field, and with a little more confidence, he could be a very good leader on the diamond. One thing that sticks out about Austin is his understanding of the game, he understands how to be an infielder. He also displays good hands on ground balls, and also around the bag, but he needs to work on his foot work. With size, and some agility work Austin will be able to improve his footwork and range, this will help him become a complete infielder, and also open more positions around the infield for him. I would also like to see him work on his arm action, he tends to get long when he throws from second, this is due to him also being a pitcher, but it will help him to shorten the arm action in the infield.

08/31/2013 - Hitting Accelerated Training Weekend (Ages 12-14) Austin makes solid contact, due to his ability to use his hands during the swing. Also Austin does a very good job of letting his entire body to work together during the swing. I would like to see Austin get wider in his stance and get his hands back, he tends to get narrow which will take away from his power. Also he tends to let his barrel drop during the swing, which will cause him to hit over and under the baseball because he will be relying on the arms only to control the barrel. Austin takes good swings and makes good contact, but at times he tends to swing soft in fear of swinging and missing, he needs to understand that it is okay to swing and miss sometimes, so he should make sure to take his swings when he is an offensive count.

07/30/2013 - Interactive Video Program - Raleigh, NC Austin is a young, solid, 2-way player who plays 2nd base and OF. In the INF, Austin has clean hands, playable footwork, and he squares up well to the ball. He keeps the ball in front, and throws with accuracy from a long arm action to his target. In the OF, Austin makes the routine plays, he fields in a square position, and he delivers the ball to his target from a long arm action. At the plate, Austin has good balance, an athletic set-up, and he swing path is short. He tracks the ball well, he has average bat speed, and he can work the ball gap to gap. Overall abilities can improve with work on the following.

Infield
1. Field out front
2. Quicken / lighten feet
3. Long toss
Outfield
1. More sure routes
2. Avoid drifting
3. Square up to ball
Offense
1. Load
2. Extension through ball
3. More lower 1/2

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
