01/13/2012 - 2012 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament This week in Arizona, Austin displayed the ability to have sure hands and a quick release behind the plate. He does well keeping the ball very close and in front when blocking. His defensive abilities should continue to develop as he learns to gain ground to his target and stay on top of his throws. At the plate, he has good rhythm and a strong lower half with excellent hands. His offensive tools should continue to improve as he learns to work downhill to contact. Austin is a young talent with a strong frame and should continue to excel as a baseball player.

10/01/2011 - Team One Futures East 2011 Schultz showed advanced ability to drive the ball to the opposite field. He worked the barrel to contact on a direct route from the inside, and extended through contact well with his hands leading the barrel. Rotated his body through contact well, and was able to generate some speed with his hands. With more consistent lower half action he'd likely be able to drive the ball all over the ballpark. Behind the plate, he showed solid arm strength and posted release times between 2.03 and 2.12.

07/15/2011 - Team One South 2011 Schultz continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities as he shines as a prospect behind the plate. His pop times showed a range of 2.03 - 2.17 seconds through a clean transfer / exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. His receiving skills have improved through an athletic setup as he sits low. His blocking skills are solid, showing as quality / playable tools at the next level. Offensive grades and power grades are now outstanding. He shows an athletic setup and loads well with his hands attacking balls through a level swing path. His hands are quick, generating plus bat speed through the baseball at contact. He is aggressive in the count early, especially with fastballs.

10/27/2010 - Arizona Fr/So Fall Classic - 2010 Austin is a young (2013) two-way player as a catcher plus at 1B with an athletic frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature. Foot speed is well above average as indicated by his 7.12 60 time. He utilizes his quick, athletic feet well through the throwing process behind the plate, gaining ground and working in line. Transfer / exchange are quick and clean with pop times showing a range of 2.11-2.25. Throws are accurate but will he will benefit by getting on a long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength with carry. Receiving and blocking skills show potential as being quality tools at the next level. At 1B, he is a solid receiver and displays plus footwork around the bag. Leadership qualities are present as he is vocal and will take charge in a game. Offensively, Schultz continues to shine through an aggressive approach. He takes a hack and maintains bat speed to and through the baseball at contact. Hands work inside the ball, utilizing all fields. He shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off his bat when centered as he was 4 for 8 with 2 2B and a 3B at the event. With 3 years to further develop, Austin has a lot of potential with the makings to be a special type player at the next level as he will get looks from the collegiate coaches.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
