08/20/2017 - College PREP - Lebanon (Nashville), TN Austin improved his foot speed at the event as he ran his best 60 time to date. Behind the plate, pop times showed in the 2.25 range with accuracy on his throws. Feet are active working in line through a clean transfer / exchange. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program and works to get rid of the baseball quicker. Glove action is soft as he sticks balls well in the zone but needs to widen his base to improve setup behind the dish. He uses his body well through the blocking process but needs to get down sooner and improve lateral movement to improve grade. At the plate, he shows an athletic setup. Hands are quick, working to and through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will increase as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently.

12/20/2016 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City - Session 1 This strong backstop continues to work hard on his game. With the bat, he stands in well with a solid base. He has a good eye, tracking pitches out of the pitcher's hand and into the zone. He battles and takes a hack at pitches he likes. Behind the plate, he sits in well and receives pitches with a soft mitt and firm wrist. Throws to 2B are accurately on the bag coming from a clean transfer/exchange. Continuing to develop his lateral quickness will help to improve his blocking technique. Screws is a solid catcher who has upside on the diamond.

10/09/2016 - College PREP - Hoover (Birmingham), AL Austin continues to show steady progress in his baseball tools. Behind the plate, pop times showed in the low 2.20 range. Hands / feet work well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly with accuracy on his throws. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength. Receiving / blocking skills show as playable tools as he continues to develop and get more reps. At the plate, he shows a quiet / athletic setup. Hands are quick (81 mph exit velocity) and work through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach.

08/21/2016 - College PREP - Lebanon (Nashville), TN Austin only showed behind the plate at the event. Feet work in line to his target through a clean transfer / exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Pop times were in the high 2.30 range with times continuing to drop as he builds more arm strength. Receiving / blocking skills show as playable tools as he continues to develop and get more reps. At the plate, he shows an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Austin has potential with time and room to progress his game.

06/25/2016 - Omaha National World Series - Session 2 Austin continues to show solid play in his baseball tools. Behind the plate, pop times showed in the 2.27 range. Feet are quick in gaining ground through a clean transfer / exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Receiving / blocking skills show as playable tools as he continues to develop and get more reps. At the plate, hands are quick and work inside the ball, utilizing all fields. He has strong hands with baseball jumping off the bat when centered. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a great personality, is very coachable and works hard to be the best player he can be.

11/08/2015 - National Tryout Plus - Germantown (Memphis), TN Austin showed only as a catcher and continues to show progress / improvements in his baseball abilities with a promising future on the diamond. Behind the plate, pop times have improved as he threw his lowest time to date at 2.26. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program and quickens transfer / exchange. Receiving / blocking skills show as quality tools that will play well at the next level. At the plate he shows an athletic setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed and through a level swing path, creating extension. He works to keep hands inside the ball and has strength in his swing with baseball exploding off the bat when centered, displaying gap to gap pop. Hitting grade will continue to improve as he works to get stride foot down sooner to work on time.

10/11/2015 - National Tryout Plus - Hoover (Birmingham), AL Screws only showed as a catcher at the event with steady play in his baseball tools. At the plate is where he shows best, showing quick hands that work inside the ball, utilizing all fields. He has strength in his swing with baseball jumping off the bat when centered, displaying gap to gap pop. Pop times where in the high 2.30 range with accuracy on his throws. Receiving / blocking skills continue to show as playable tools at the next level. He tracks balls in, displaying soft hands and shows off his athletic abilities on balls in the dirt.

04/19/2015 - College PREP - Germantown (Memphis), TN Screws has really improved his abilities at the plate through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed to and through a level swing path, creating extension. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields and has strength in his swing. He has power potential as he shows a feel for the barrel with baseball exploding off the bat when centered. Behind the plate, pop times showed in the range of 2.29-2.41 with accuracy on his throws. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Receiving / blocking skills have improved as well, now showing as quality tools that will play well at the next level.

12/20/2014 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City - Session 1 Behind the plate, Austin has a good setup, presents an early target and takes control of the game. His exchange is clean and he works in-line toward 2B. Austin shows a very balanced/simple approach at the plate. He takes a direct path to the ball and hits off a stiff front leg. He has a good idea of the zone, but will benefit by being more aggressive early in count. On the mound, he throws from a high 3/4 arm slot with a FB that sits around 75 with a slight cut action. He is able to repeat his delivery and pitches with good tempo getting hitters to pound balls into ground. He gets off the mound, showing his athleticism as he backs up bags well. Austin is a coachable player who listens and is willing to make adjustments.

08/17/2014 - College PREP - Lebanon (Nashville), TN Austin continues to show as a C/RHP but currently projects best behind the plate for the next level where he continues to show improvements. Pop times have improved as he threw his lowest time to date at 2.28. He gets rid of the baseball quickly with times continuing to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Receiving / blocking skills show as playable tools as he continues to get more reps and improves. At the plate, he shows an open / athletic setup. Hands are loose and aggressive working through a level swing path. He works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Power numbers will continue to improve as he loads more and learns to use his lower half more efficiently. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 70-71 mph. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with arm side run. Control is solid as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock to the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength and continues to develop better off speed stuff.

01/17/2014 - Baseball Factory All-America Pre-Season Rookie Tournament Austin continues to show improvements behind the plate and on the mound. As a catcher he has quick feet, receives with sure hands, and is agile when blocking. His exchange is quick and he stays in line making accurate throws to 2nd base. On the mound Austin pounds the zone with his fastball and curve. He has good command with both pitches and is very aggressive. Austin has good balance throughout his mechanics and showed good athleticism with a clean delivery. Offensively he has an open stance, smooth load, and good balance. His bat speed is quick and he finds the barrel consistently allowing him to make solid contact. He has the potential to be a future power threat at the next level if he continues to use his lower half.

12/27/2013 - Baseball Factory Winter Classic Austin is a primary catcher that also pitches. Defensively he receives with sure hands, gives a big target, and continues to improve on his blocking. His transfer is a bit long, but should get quicker with proper footwork and more experience. On the mound Austin has a smooth delivery, clean arm action, and gets good arm extension. His fastball has good arm side run and he works down in the zone. His changeup is developing and it has a sinking / fading action. Austin has a good mound presence and should continue to improve on the mound with more innings. At the plate he has an athletic setup, good balance, and delivers the barrel with good accuracy. He is very aggressive and gets his best swing off during games. Austin has a lot of power potential and with more lower half he should be a solid gap to gap hitter at the next level.

07/27/2012 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City Austin Screws is an athletic 2018 graduate who catches and also pitches. Behind the plate Austin has firm hands, an athletic and flexible set up, with active footwork. He needs to work on his blocking to make him a complete catcher. He stays inline with his release and showed a good pop time. At the plate Austin has an athletic set up and takes a short stride. He uses his lower half well and made consistent contact during the games while having quality at bats. On the mound Austin throws strikes with his fastball and knows how to pitch. He has a great attitude and wants to learn. With his athleticism, Austin will be able to pitch either catcher or pitcher and compete at the next level.

05/06/2012 - Interactive Video Program - Atlanta, GA Austin is a young, talented RHP who also catches. On the mound, Austin has a FB that touches 71 MPH, he has a loose, easy arm action, and a repeatable / polished delivery. He has on-time separation, good direction toward home, and he keeps his eyes on target. Behind the plate, Austin has active feet, firm hands, and good body control. He catches out front, he centers well with his body, and his exchange is clean. Austin has a short arm action with accuracy to 2nd base. Offensively, Austin has a square / athletic set-up, good balance, and a level swing. He has average bat speed, he makes square contact, and he uses his lower 1/2 well. Overall abilities can improve if Austin can work on the following.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
