Official Scouting Report

  • C/RHPPosition Projection

01/17/2014 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament Blain is a talented catcher with a solid skill-set. Defensively, he tracks the ball into his mitt and sticks it firmly. Pop times at now in the 2.01 range as he gains ground and gets good lower 1/2 drive on his throws. Offensively, he shows an open stance while getting back into a strong loaded position. He is aggressive and takes a hack, as he likes the ball on the inner 1/2. Bain is a sound defender who will take charge on the diamond.

10/09/2013 - Arizona Senior Fall Classic Blain showed as a catcher plus on the mound for the first time at the event but currently projects best behind the plate for the next level. Pop times have improved now showing a range of 2.06-2.10 as he displays outstanding arm strength. Throws are accurate with carry as he displays a quick / clean release. Receiving / blocking skills are outstanding, showing as quality tools that will play well at the next level. At the plate, Baily shows an open / athletic setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He uses his lower half well and shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered, mainly to the pull side. For hitting grades to continue to improve, he needs to work to keep hands inside the ball to utilize all fields. At the event, he was 2 for 10. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 82-83 mph. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break as he needs to work to stay on top of pitch. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is gained through a long toss program. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a great attitude and is a leader behind plate.

06/21/2013 - USA Baseball 17U Championships Blain continues to show improvement in his baseball abilities at both as a catcher and in the OF. Behind the plate, pop times have improve as he threw his lowest time to date at 2.16. Feet are active as he works in line through a clean transfer / exchange and gets rid of the baseball quickly. Times will continue to drop as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. Receiving / blocking skills show as outstanding tools that will play well at the next level. In the OF, he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls and works to get behind balls, playing through well with momentum to his target. He moves well laterally, displaying range in the OF. At the plate, he continues to shine through an athletic setup and displays outstanding hitting abilities. Hands are quick, generating plus bat speed through a short / direct path. Barrel accuracy is a plus with baseball exploding off his bat when centered. At the event, he was 6 for 19. Mental makeup is a plus as he plays hard and is very coachable.

04/14/2013 - College PREP - Plano (DFW), TX Bailey is a talented OF/C who can swing the stick. Offensively, he displays an athletic and open setup with a middle of the field approach. Blain delivers the barrel with authority and drives the ball to all fields. He has more power potential if he can incorporate his lower 1/2 more. Behind the plate, Bailey is soft handed and has a clean exchange. Pop times are as low as 2.23 and will lower with continued work on his exchange. In the OF, he takes good routes/angles to work behind the fly-ball. He moves well through fluid footwork and makes strong and accurate throws to his target. Bailey should get some looks to advance his game to the next level with his abilities on the diamond.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
