01/22/2012 - College PREP - Jacksonville, FL Ben is a solid, athletic 2B/C that will graduate in 2014. Feet are quick / active as he moves well laterally, flashing range with clean hands. He needs to attack groundballs, play through, and present hands more out front to improve defensive grades. Behind the plate, he gains ground, works in-line, and shows a quick transfer / exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Pop times show a range of 2.03-2.19. He needs to continue to build arm strength and work on accuracy to continue to lower pop times. Receiving / blocking skills show potential as being playable tools as he continues to improve. At the plate, Hockensmith shows a balanced approach with hands working through a level swing path. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed and he displays good barrel accuracy with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered. Lower half works well through the swing but needs to work on keeping hands inside the ball to utilize all fields to continue to improve hitting grades. With 2 years to further develop, Ben has a lot of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.
