Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/LHPPosition Projection

08/27/2017 - National Tryout Plus - Wilmington, DE Benjamin showed solid improvements on the mound, at the plate, and in the OF during his workout in Wilmington. On the hill, Benjamin improved arm action, control, and delivery grades, showing a smooth/simple delivery and a loose arm action. He keeps his eyes on target, repeats his delivery, and throws strikes. More lower body and extension along with added arm strength will continue to improve mound effectiveness. In the OF, Benjamin showed pre-pitch actions, an aggressive approach to the ball, and loose overall actions. He has a quick release and accuracy with carry to his target. Offensively, Benjamin has a square set-up, proper load, and level swing. He has a compact swing and can spray to all fields. Hitting can continue to improve with more lower body, added strength, and better barrel accuracy.

10/16/2016 - College PREP - Bel Air (Baltimore), MD Benjamin continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities with a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. In the OF, defensive abilities have improved as he displays smooth / athletic actions. Feet are aggressive as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He will benefit by getting behind balls more to play through with momentum to his target. Hands / feet work well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. At the plate, he only showed from the left side. Hitting / power potential has improved through an athletic setup. Hands are quick and work to and through a level swing path. He works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 66 mph. Fastball shows good arm side run. Breaking ball displays 2/8 shape with gradual break. He shows good arm side run on his changeup but slows arm speed, tipping off pitch to hitters. Developing more arm strength through a long toss program will aid in further development on the mound.

12/27/2015 - Baseball Factory Winter Classic - Session 2 Benjamin is a very hard worker who asks questions and has a willingness to learn. He shows his passion for the game every time he steps onto the diamond. In the OF, he is aggressive to track down fly-balls to his right and left. He secures the ball with 2-hands, gains ground toward his target and fires accurate throws. As a hitter - this lefty shows patience as he tracks pitches into the zone - not swinging at much that he cannot handle (3 walks at the event). Swing is to and through the zone as he connects and sprays the ball to all parts of the field. Leveling out his swing path along with engaging his lower 1/2 more will help to improve abilities at the plate. On the mound, Dawson fires from a loose/free arm action repeating his delivery well. FB shows some tail while breaking ball has 1/7 shape. He gets good glove side lead an works downhill. He controls the running game by varying his looks and delivery time to the plate. Continuing to strengthen his arm (long toss) will aid in his development on the mound. Benjamin has skills and will continue to progress as he adds overall strength (physically matures).

08/03/2015 - Interactive Video Program - Wilmington, DE Benjamin continues to work hard on his skills. On the mound, this lefty keeps his eyes on the target and works in-line toward the plate. Arm works long & loose with smooth separation. FB ranges from 59-62 mph. Breaking ball has 1/7 shape with tight spin. He works the ball in and out and throws strikes consistently. Driving more of his lower 1/2 off of the rubber downhill will help to add more velocity on his FB. In the OF, Dawson shows active footwork and hustles into position behind the fly-ball. He secures the ball with 2-hands and works through the ball well, gaining ground toward his target. At the plate, this LHH has a balanced approach with rhythm in his hands. Swing is short/direct as he connects and drives the ball back up the middle of the field. A 2020 grad - Dawson will continue to develop his skills and will add strength as he matures physically.

11/13/2014 - Baseball Factory Select Training & Competition at Pirate City Benjamin is a very respectful player who works hard every day. Offensively, this RHH shows a balanced approach with on-time rhythm. He is a 'scrappy' top of the line-up type of guy as he battles and proves to be a tough out. He puts the barrel on the ball and puts pressure on the defense. Increased bat speed and extension through contact will help him to grow as a hitter. Defensively, Dawson works quickly as he hustles into position behind the fly-ball. Exchange is clean and moves in-line toward his target. Playing through the ball and getting on a long toss program will help to improve abilities in the OF. Benjamin also got on the mound throwing a FB & CB. He keeps his eyes on the target and stays directional toward the dish. FB now tops out at 58 mph while it shows good arm-side run. Working to finish more out over his front side will help to improve abilities on the mound. Dawson is a coachable player who will only continue to get better.

08/04/2014 - Interactive Video Program - Wilmington, DE Ben is a switch hitting 2-way player OF/LHP. In the OF, he hustles into position behind the fly-ball. He pays through the ball well and delivers accurate throws to his target. At the plate, Ben has an aggressive approach and is looking to take a hack. He throws his hands, connects and drives the ball. On the bump, this LHP has a 3-pitch mix coming from a high 3/4 arm slot. He works in-line toward the plate and fires from a free/easy arm action. FB tops out at 57 mph while breaking ball shows 2/8 shape. Overall abilities in his game will improve with work on the following.

1. Arm strength
2. Pre-pitch footwork
Offense
1. Rhythm/Timing
2. Relax grip
Pitching

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
