12/27/2013 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City Blaine is a young, lean SS/RHP that will graduate in 2017. Currently, he projects slightly better at SS for the next level but has potential on the mound. Defensive grades are well above average as he displays clean / smooth actions. Feet are active as he displays proper footwork as he works to square ground balls up, displaying clean hands. He attacks balls, is aggressive and moves well side to side, flashing range in the MIF. For defensive grade to continue to improve, he needs to increase foot quickness. Throws are accurate with on line carry but needs to work to get rid of the baseball quicker. At the plate he is a switch hitter that projects best from the right side. He shows an athletic / squared setup with rhythm and tracks ball well. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed and work through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered. He has an accurate eye with strong recognition of the strike zone as he drew 4 BB at the event. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 67-70 mph. Breaking ball displays 12/6 shape with sharp break and shows potential as being a quality pitch when he stays on top. Control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock to the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude, works hard, and is very coachable. With 3 years to further develop, Smith has a lot of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches with his abilities as he continues to improve.
