07/31/2013 - Baseball Factory Pro Select Training at Vero Beach (Ages 14-18) Jones continues to show steady play in his abilities as a SS/RHP. Feet are active as he works to square ball balls up, displaying clean hands. He needs to play through balls more while presenting hands more out front, and increase foot quickness to continue to improve defensive grade. Throws are accurate but needs to build more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, he shows a balanced setup with rhythm. Hands are loose to and through a level swing path, flashing extension. He makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side as he needs to work to stay inside the ball to utilize all fields. Power numbers will continue to increase as he learns to use his lower half more. On the mound, fastball showed range of 60-63 mph. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and hard worker.

06/16/2013 - College PREP - Hoover (Birmingham), AL Colten is a thin, 2 way player who will graduate in 2016. Defensively, Colton has sure hands, decent range, and he moves with agility to the ball. He keeps it in front, his exchange is clean, and he throws with accuracy across the diamond. If Colten can play more through, field out front, and add arm strength, defense will get better. On the mound, Colten has a long / loosen arm action, a controlled balance point, and he finishes in a complete position. Mound effectiveness can improve with better off-speed and added velocity. At the plate, Colten has a square set-up, good balance, and a short stride. He gets his lower 1/2 through but will need to shorten up, add bat speed, and work on his timing to raise hitting grades.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "present" abilities (tools), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year, using the scale below. However, grades 10-18 are not available for use with High School players (ages 14-18), while grades 55-70 are not available for use with Pre High School players (ages 12-14). These instances are marked as "--- N/A ---" in the "Description" fields below.
