Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 2B/RHPPosition Projection

07/14/2011 - Cape Cod Pro Select Training - July 14-18, 2011 Shearer improved his defensive and arm strength at the event. Feet are active in attacking ground balls while playing through with his body. Hands are soft, clean, and sure as he makes the plays. Fundamentally he is sound at 2B. Throws show accuracy, flashing carry but he will benefit staying on a long toss program to aid in building more arm strength. Offensively, Brian continues to show as a switch hitter but projects slightly better from the right side. He shows a balanced approach and loads well with hands working inside the ball, utilizing all fields.

09/04/2010 - Accelerated Infield Weekend (Commuter) Shearer continues to show improvements in his defensive play in the middle of the IF. He shows a sound approach as he takes good routes in working around but needs to play through balls more aggressively with his body. Throws are accurate and he throws well on the run but will benefit by getting on a long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength with carry. Brian is a fundamentally sound and is extremely coachable with once his physical attributes catch up with his skill set, he will be a very talented infielder.

07/20/2010 - Cape Cod Training 2010 - Session 3 Brian is a young (2014) two-way player as a SS plus on the mound with a lean, wiry frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature. Currently, he projects best at SS for the next level. Feet are active in coming to get the baseball but needs to play through more with his body. He makes plays but displays some stiff actions. Arm slot is low ' flashing carry but needs to get on a long toss program to provide more carry. Offensively, Shearer is a switch hitter that shows best from the right side. He shows a balanced approach with hands working through a level swing path. Power numbers will improve as he learns to utilize his lower half more efficiently through the swing. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 63-67 mph with sinking action. Breaking ball is best off speed pitch displaying 10/4 shape with tight spin. With 4 years to further develop, Brian has abilities with time and room to improve. Throughout the event Shearer was a very polite young man.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
