Official Scouting Report

  • OF/LHPPosition Projection

11/10/2016 - Baseball Factory Select Training & Competition at Pirate City Briar continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities with a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a 7.10 runner. In the OF, he reads balls well off the bat and utilizes his feet well in tracking down balls through proper routes / angles. He works behind the baseball and plays through with momentum to his target and gets rid of the baseball quickly. Range is a plus as he covers a lot of ground. At the plate he has improved his hitting / power potential through a squared setup. Hands are quick (81 mph exit velocity) and work through an aggressive swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields. He shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered, displaying gap to gap pop. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 74-76 mph with arm side run. Changeup is best off speed pitch as he maintains arm speed with cutting action. Breaking ball displays 1/7 shape with gradual break. Control is outstanding as he throws strikes with all his pitches, attacking hitters. Building more arm strength through a long toss program will aid in further development on the mound. Mental makeup is a plus as he is very coachable and works hard to be the best he can be. With 3 years to further develop, Briar has a lot of potential and will get looks from the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities, possibly as a two-way guy.

08/07/2016 - College PREP - Council Bluffs (Omaha), IA Briar is an athletic OF/LHP who has a bright future on the diamond. Foot speed is well above average as indicated by his 60 time of 7.19. At the plate, he displays solid hitting / power potential through an athletic setup. Hands are quick (80 mph exit velocity) and work through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact with power showing best to the pull side. Power will continue to improve as he utilizes his lower half more aggressively. In the OF, he displays smooth / athletic actions. He utilizes his athletic feet well in tracking down balls through proper routes / angles and utilizes two hands well through the fielding process. He works to get behind balls playing through with momentum to his target. Range is a plus as he reads balls well off the bat and covers a lot of ground. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 74-77 mph. Breaking ball displays 2/8 with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup but needs to develop more movement. Stock on the mound will continue to increase as he builds more arm strength. With 3 years to further develop, Briar has a lot of potential with a lot of room to progress his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
