10/17/2015 - 2015 Under Armour Showcase: Baseball Factory's Futures South Bowen is a large physical presence at 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds, and showed big left-handed raw power along with big fastball velocity. Since we saw him in January 2015, he has gained 10 mph on his fastball (up from 82 mph to 92 mph on top end). He worked exclusively from the stretch, threw a high volume of fastball strikes and showed the ability to land his low to mid 70s breaking ball. He pitched in the 86-88 mph range and reached 91 and 92 a couple of times each. After breaking his hands, he got his arm up behind him and was able to extend out front with his fastball. His combination of stuff and control is interesting, and could fit a variety of profiles depending on how his stuff looks from the windup and what happens with a third pitch. As a position player, he features the ability to drive the ball a long way to the pull side and is a more than capable defender at first base. His stroke is built more on strength and leverage than speed, but he showed the ability in game at bats to get the barrel to quality stuff -- giving him a chance to develop power frequency. Defensively, he has more than enough arm for the position, and moved his feet well around the bag. Overall, a talented two-way player with a coveted combination of left-handed power and left-handed velocity. He has made big progress in less than a year, and will be a player to watch closely in the 2017 class.
