Bryce continues to show progress in his baseball abilities as he continues to grow and mature. On 12/20/09, Bryce worked about at just the C position, and showed both defensive and offensive improvements. Defensively, Bryce has quick feet, short steps, and releases the ball quickly and accurately. He blocks the baseball well, by centering the ball properly on his body, and by taking appropriate angles to the ball. His receiving grade improved from 45 to 50, as he continues to hold a soft, quiet target. Offensively, Bryce has good balance, bat speed, and good use of his lower 1/2. He again shows the ability to make solid contact and he shows a proper load. Bryce is a strong, and athletic hitter, with a good bat. His hitting grade improved from a 42 t0 45 since we last say Ely in 8/09. Overall offense can improve by becoming shorter and quicker with his swing. Bryce has shown a lot of improvement over the years, and we can could expect the same as he steps onto a College Campus.

Bryce is a C/3B who brings a solid high school frame to the diamond. At C, Bryce has descent feel when receiving the pitch, descent deadening of the dirt balls and average recovery afterwards, and is online and consistent with throws to his target. He would become an even better C by receiving the pitch with more sway and less arm extension, by blocking to his left and right by throwing his hips to the baseball, and by staying low when coming out of his stance to throw. At 3B, Ely has easy arm action, he gets rid of the ball quickly, and fields backhands soft and smooth. He would benefit from fielding the ground balls more in front, by becoming more sure handed, and by finishing off his throws to put the baseball more on the line. When hitting, Bryce shows a decent bat path to the ball, decent arm extension on his swing, and makes consistent contact. To make himself a better hitter Ely needs to get his stride foot down on time, and he needs to stay inside the baseball more to allow for better bat speed and the ability to hit to all fields.
06/20/2009 - Omaha Pro Select Training and Tournament - Week 2
Bryce is a two-way player at 3B and as a catcher with a strong looking body that shows projection as he continues to physically mature and fill out. Foot speed is below average and he needs to get on a speed / agility program to improve foot quickness for the next level. He utilizes his feet well through the throwing process flashing above average pop times as indicated by his low 2.03 time. He shows a quick release and is accurate with his throws. Blocking and receiving skills are solid average and will play at the next level. Defensive abilities at 3B are also solid average. Arm strength is solid average and he will benefit by getting on a strict long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength with carry on throws. At the plate, hitting abilities and power are slightly above average. He shows an aggressive approach with a solid feel for the barrel. He has some mechanical flaws that are hindering him from reaching his full potential at the plate with grades improving quickly with instruction and adjustments. Bryce is a class 5 type player and will get looks from the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.
