Official Scouting Report

  • LHP/1BPosition Projection

09/20/2015 - College PREP - Georgetown (Austin), TX Caleb is a projectable (6'0"/175) 2-way player who continues to work hard on his game. On the mound, this lefty repeats his delivery well. He works to a tall balance point and utilizes his long/lanky frame to extend through toward the plate. Separation is smooth and arm works freely as he mixes his pitches well. Breaking ball shows 9/3 shape while changeup is thrown with FB arm speed. More glove-side lead and more lower 1/2 drive off of the rubber will help to tap into added velocity. At 1B, Caleb hustles into a square fielding position. He has fluid/athletic actions, is sure handed and can pick it. At the plate, this LH swinger shows a balanced setup with patience. Swing is level as he engages his lower 1/2 and drives the middle of the field. Swinging on a shorter/more direct path will result in increased power. Crawley has upside and is a few adjustments away from unlocking his potential on the diamond.

11/07/2013 - Baseball Factory Select Training & Competition at Pirate City Caleb is a lean, solid LHP/1B that will graduate in 2017. Feet are active as he works to square ground balls up, displaying clean hands as he makes the routine plays. For defensive grade to continue to improve, he needs to develop better footwork around the bag and works to present hands more out front. Throws are accurate, flashing carry but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, Crawley shows a squared, balance stance with rhythm. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel with baseball jumping off the bat when centered. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 67-71 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball shows as a quality pitch, displaying 1/7 shape with late break. Stock to the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength and work to throw more strikes. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude, works hard, and is very coachable. With 4 years to further develop, Caleb has abilities with time and room to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "present" abilities (tools), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year, using the scale below. However, grades 10-18 are not available for use with High School players (ages 14-18), while grades 55-70 are not available for use with Pre High School players (ages 12-14). These instances are marked as "--- N/A ---" in the "Description" fields below.
