Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/OFPosition Projection

01/15/2016 - Baseball Factory Spring Training in Arizona (Ages 14-18) Caleb Dobbs showed as both a RHP/3B at his most recent outing with Baseball Factory. Offensively, he got his lower half into position to hit, staying square to stride, and delivered the barrel on a direct path to contact. He had good rhythm from stance to launch to swing, and drove with his hands and hips together. There is more untapped power with greater hand activation - getting the barrel in a stronger slot to launch and hit. Defensively in the OF, he made the routine plays with sure hands and cleaned up his footwork to throw, keeping him in-line to his targets. On the hill, he threw his FB from a simple/clean & consistent delivery. He threw strikes, but should continue working on moving in and out around the plate and on developing a secondary pitch. Overall - Caleb is only a freshman and has present fundamentals to continue strengthening his game on all sides of the diamond.

09/13/2015 - Interactive Video Program - Fresno, CA Caleb is a young RHP who has a projectable frame. On the mound, this righty throws a 3-pitch mix (FB, CB, CH) coming from a 3/4 arm slot. He keeps his eyes on the target and repeats well. FB ranges from 63-68 mph while showing some run. He keeps it down in the zone which will result in GB outs. Breaking ball has 11/5 shape with sharp/late action. With the bat, Caleb shows an open stance with good balance. He swings against a firm front side, squares the ball up and hits line drives. Overall abilities in his game will improve with work on the following.

Pitching
1. Stride
2. Finish with extension
3. Arm strength (long toss)
Offense
1. Shorter/more direct swing path
2. Contact points
3. Let ball travel

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
