Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 1B/RHPPosition Projection

05/31/2015 - College PREP - Tallahassee, FL Gay continues to show as a RHP plus at 1B for the first time at the event and continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities with a promising future on the diamond. Currently, he projects best at 1B for the next level. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a solid 7.28 60 runner. He utilizes his quick feet well in his lateral movement, displaying range. Feet are active as he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver, displaying clean hands. Defensive grade will continue to improve as he attacks balls more while presenting hands more out front. At the plate, hitting / power grades have really improved through an athletic setup. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing with plus barrel accuracy as the baseball explodes off the bat when centered, mainly to the pull side. Hitting grade will continue to improve as he works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields. On the mound, arm strength has improved as he threw his top velocity to date at 81 mph. Fastball showed a range of 80-81 mph with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 10/4 shape with gradual break. Changeup is best off speed pitch as he maintains arm speed, showing a feel for with arm side run. Control is a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program.

02/16/2014 - College PREP - Orlando, FL Caleb is a big bodied RHP who has a 3-pitch mix. He works to a tall balance point and delivers his pitches from a high 3/4 arm slot. He gets good glove side lead and works in-line toward the dish. FB shows some arm-side run and tops out at 77 mph. Breaking ball has 10/4 shape while CH has sink. He has a repeatable delivery and works both sides of the plate. As a hitter, Caleb tracks the ball into the zone and waits for his pitch. He likes the pitch on the inner 1/2 and shows pop to his pull-side. More lower 1/2 drive will result in increased power. Gay is only a 2016 grad and has a lot of time to continue to develop his game.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
