Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 3B/RHPPosition Projection

01/16/2009 - Under Armour Pre-Season All America - 2009 Hanes continues to show as a two way player at 3B and on the mound. Currently, he does project best on the mound where he has abilities to be a solid player at the next level. He has improved his power grade at the plate, now showing well above average. He has strength in his swing as the baseball jumps off his bat when centered. He shows a controlled load that allows his hands to work through the zone maintaining plus bat speed through the baseball. He showed HR power to the pull side. Arm strength continues to show outstanding as he topped out at 88 mph. Caleb can get it done in the field and at the plate with the makings to be a special type player at the next level.

08/30/2008 - ACR-E - Maryland - 9 Caleb continues to show well at our events. Improved his fielding grade and hitting grades at this event. At 3B, showed loose arm action with throws that have good carry and life. Showed soft hands with ability to field ball out front. Has decent laterally movement cause of good instincts and quick first step. Flashes ability to come get and play thru ball. At the plate, had quick hands with level path that led to good bat speed and good power to all fields. Uses his lower half efficiently. On the mound, arm was free and easy with loose actions. Compact delivery with consistent mechanics allowed for a lot of strikes. Has to control his leg kick which will allowed for better balance. Flashed ability to extend thru slider but would like to see more consistency with it.

01/11/2008 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America - 2008 Caleb is a prototypical RHP - tall, strong, and athletic. On the mound, was able to continuously repeat his delivery and had good rhythm. Showed good use of lower half explosion and quick upper half. At times, would fall off to 1B which would lose some momentum. Would like to see him keep front hip closed and to play long toss with CH to maintain appropriate arm speed. At 3B, throws had good life and carry on them after a clean exchange. Will certainly improve with enhanced foot speed. At the plate, showed good bat path with bat speed. Hands stayed inside ball and produced some pop. We see Caleb on the mound, but there is no reason he can't be a two-way guy at the collegiate level.

06/20/2007 - ACR-E-Maryland 3 Caleb is a big, strong 3B/RHP. At 3B, good presentation and soft hands leads to quick release with loose arm, good carry, and accuracy. Would like to see foot speed get better. On the mound, keep everything down with arm-side movement. Was consistent with mechanics. Will improve with not rushing, staying closed, and falling towards home plate. At the plate, balance and good load, leads to bat speed and good use of lower half. Shows pop on pull side. Will improve when finishes swing and lets ball get deep.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
