Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 1B/LHPPosition Projection

04/12/2015 - National Tryout - Chattanooga, TN Stafford continues to show as a 1B/LHP and continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. At 1B, defensive grade has improved as he displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. He works to square balls up, displaying clean hands with grade continuing to improve as he attacks balls more, plays through, and increases foot quickness. Throws are accurate but needs to build more arm strength through a long toss program and work to get rid of the baseball quicker to improve arm grade. At the plate he shows a balanced / athletic setup. Hands are loose and work through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side. Hitting grade will continue to improve as he works to stay inside the ball to utilize all fields. Power numbers will continue to improve as he adds overall body strength and utilizes his lower half more efficiently. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 62-65 mph. Breaking ball displays 2/8 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for but needs to develop more movement on pitch. Stock on the mound will continue to increase as he builds more arm strength and work to throw more strikes.

01/16/2015 - Baseball Factory National Spring Training at Pirate City Caleb is a young 1B/LHP'er who really shined on the mound. From the left side, Caleb pitched well, while racking up the strikeouts due to mixing speeds. Caleb has a clean delivery that is repeatable and constantly works ahead in the count. The change-up is Caleb's best pitch as it comes from the same arm angle as his fastball and has a 10 MPH difference. Caleb will continue to improve by implementing a long toss program to increase arm strength. At the plate, Caleb has a balanced set up and shows good rhythm in his hands. Power numbers will increase as Caleb continues to grow and get stronger and utilize his lower half. At first base, Caleb has efficient footwork around the bad and good range to his backhand side. Getting his hand out in front more will allow him to field more surely and become a better defender. Caleb is a player that is constantly making adjustments and has time on his side.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
