Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 1B/LHPPosition Projection

01/18/2019 - Baseball Factory National Spring Training at Pirate City Calryan is a coachable 1B/LHP prospect who worked hard on his skills during his time at the Spring Training at Pirate City. In the field, Calryan shows active footwork and is agile moving to the ball. He makes the routine plays and keeps his throws accurate to his target. Fielding the ball out in front of his body can help Calryan improve defensively. At the plate, this switch hitter shows a solid swing from both sides. He sets up in an athletic stance takes a controlled stride. He takes a level swing and hits agains a strong front side, leading to consistent contact and line drives. Calryan can improve as a hitter by activating his hands in his load. On the mound, Calryan gathers over the rubber and works to keep his pitches around the zone. He shows a two pitch mix with his fastball topping out at 69mph. Breaking ball sits from 60-61mph with 2-8 break. Staying inline towards the plate can help Calryan improve as a pitcher. With three more years to develop, Calryan has the time and potential to further progress his skills on the field.

09/16/2018 - College PREP - Indianapolis, IN Calryan is an athletic and talented 2022 2-way with the ability to switch hit. At 1B, Calryan is on time with his prep step, presents a low/early glove, and works from the ground up. He makes the routine play and has good footwork off the bag. At the plate, Calryan is a consistent line drive hitter from both sides. From the right side he keeps his head down at contact and stays balanced through contact. From the left side he loads his hands back into the drive position and keeps a middle approach. On the bump, Calryan gathers over the rubber, separates on time, and keeps his eyes on his target. He is a strike thrower with the fastball, and has a good out pitch with the breaking ball. Calryan will continue to improve with experience and we hope to see his progress in the future.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "present" abilities (tools), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year, using the scale below. However, grades 10-18 are not available for use with High School players (ages 14-18), while grades 55-70 are not available for use with Pre High School players (ages 12-14). These instances are marked as "--- N/A ---" in the "Description" fields below.
