Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • SS/RHPPosition Projection

06/25/2017 - National Tryout Plus - Bellevue (Seattle), WA Carl showed at SS and on the mound for the first time at the event. He continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. At the plate is where he improved the most through an athletic setup with rhythm. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He has strength in his swing and works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Power will continue to improve as he utilizes his lower half more efficiently. At SS, he moves well laterally, especially to his glove side. Glove action is soft / sure and he presents well out front. He shows off his athletic abilities in his feeds / turns of the double play. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 64-67 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with early break. He throws a knuckleball that shows sinking action. Stock on the mound will continue to improve as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program.

06/17/2017 - Omaha National World Series - Session 1 (Ages 14-18) Carl is a hardworking SS/RHP prospect who has a well-rounded skill set and graduates in 2018. As a right-handed hitter, Carl has an open, square stance with a firm front side and his weight in the front of his stance. He has fluid rhythm with a good load and takes a short stride. He has an upward swing path and is developing bat speed. Carl grinds through his at-bats with a solid approach. In the field, Carl plays with effective footwork and covers good ground in each direction laterally. He presents his glove and fields the ball with soft hands. Carl has a clean exchange leading into a long arm action throwing from a high 3/4 arm slot. His throws are accurate across the diamond. He also does a nice job with his double-play feeds. On the mound, Carl has a balanced, on-time delivery throwing from a high 3/4 arm slot. He lands closed to home plate and has a long stride length. Carl competes and fills up the strike zone. Overall, Carl has a versatile skill and potential to take his game to the next level with development.

06/27/2016 - National Tryout Plus - Bellevue (Seattle), WA Carl continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date. At SS, he has improved defensive abilities, displaying smooth / fluid actions. Feet are active and aggressive as he works to square balls up displaying clean hands. He shows off his athletic abilities on his feeds / turns of the double play. At the plate he shows an open / athletic setup. Hands are quick and work through a direct / level swing path. He shows good barrel accuracy with power showing best to the pull side. Power will increase as he works to utilize his lower half more aggressively.

01/15/2016 - Baseball Factory Spring Training in Arizona (Ages 14-18) Carl continues to develop and worked hard on his skills during his time in Arizona. At SS, he works on the balls of his feet and is ready to go right or left. He moves well into a square fielding position and tracks GB's into a soft mitt. Transfer is smooth with accuracy on his throws. He moves well around the 2B bag and can turn 2 efficiently. Fielding the GB more out in front along with playing through it more will help him to take the next step defensively. As a hitter - Carl stands in well with centered balance and rhythm to load. He swings on a direct path and barrels the ball up consistently. Striding and swinging against a more firm front side will allow him to engage his lower 1/2 - increasing pop off of the bat. The "walk-through" drill off of the tee will force him to use his lower 1/2 which will aid in his development. Carl has upside with still time to progress.

09/27/2015 - College PREP - Bellevue (Seattle), WA Cal is a young (2018 grad) SS who has a MIF type build. He takes a quick first step with active prep as he is aggressive and attacks GB's hit his way. He secures the ball with 2-hands, gathers well and works in-line toward his target at 1B. With the bat, this RHH shows a square setup with a solid base and rhythm in his hands. He likes the pitch middle-in and will pull it with some pop. Improving his timing and utilizing more of his lower 1/2 will help to take his offensive skills to the next level. A 2018 grad - Cal has tools with still time to develop and physically mature (get stronger).

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
