09/20/2014 - 2014 Under Armour Showcase: Futures East Cortes is a truly unique player for a number of reasons. First, he throws with both hands - goes right handed as an infielder, and left handed on the mound and in the outfield. Second, he plays all over the field - middle infield, outfield and pitches. Third, he generates a ton of raw power from a 5-foot-8 frame. He has a mature looking build at around 190 pounds, and not surprisingly he doesn't run very well. However, his left handed stroke is fun to watch - he does not get cheated, makes a full and aggressive move thru the zone. He accelerates the barrel thru the hitting zone very well, and the ball really jumps off his bat. He appears to be looking to drive the ball, doesn't just want to hit it - this combined with some things in his stroke make him a power over hitting ability type guy. He appears to be a more natural defender in the infield, though his OF actions are fine. He throws very well from both spots, but I like the offensive 2B profile the best for him. He appears to have some instinctual feel to approach a ground ball, and his hands work fine. On the mound, he features good feel for pitching with the type stuff that would be tough on left handed hitters. Fastball has arm side life, and he shows feel for breaking ball and change up. Overall, naturally talented and uniquely versatile player with exciting offensive ability.
