Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • C/3BPosition Projection

01/16/2009 - Under Armour Pre-Season All America - 2009 Leal is a catcher with well above average defensive skill set. Pop times in the 1.88-2.16 range at this event. He is direct and gains ground. Exchange is quick, and his throws have good life and carry. Glove is soft and he has a pretty good idea on the catch. Does a good job on the block as well. The switch hitter has similar ability on both sides. Good balance in the stance and solid bat speed as well. Swing is a bit uphill and he is very pull-conscious. Would like to see him use the whole field more effectively. Has some life in his barrel. Good looking catching prospect.

07/26/2008 - ACR-E - Maryland - 6 Carlos improved his velo to 88mph and pop time to 1.88. Behind the plate, throws to 2B had good carry with lots of life. Had good base for receiving with low target, soft hands, and good elbow flexion. Had a controlled fall blocking, created angles and was quick to recover. At 3B, throws had good carry with life while being accurate to 1B. Had soft hands, excelling on BH, with decent lateral movement. At the plate, has a more natural LH swing. Had ability to crush balls, from both sides, with his good bat speed and pop. Holds his ground well and keeps head on ball. Utilization of lower half will enhance his power even more. He will be an outstanding catcher at the next level and will be able to help at 3B as well.

06/05/2008 - Under Armour Southeast Regional Tournament - 2008 Leal has made significant strides in his all around defensive ability, now shows near well above average arm strength along with well above average blocking skills. He has room to further improve his already solid receiving skills, sets up well and showed good hands. His catch and throw skills stood out most, along with a strong arm he showed a quick release and an accurate arm. At the plate, he featured well above average raw power from the left side. His offensive approach was very aggressive, he swings early in the count - is certainly looking to hit, and does not get cheated. Is not quite the same hitter from the right side of the plate, does not have as much life in his stroke or raw power. Overall, has a lot of ability to work with and has really made great strides in his game over the last year. Improved to Class 3 overall rating.

01/25/2008 - Pre-Season Invitational Tournament - 2008 Leal is a switch hitting catcher with potential for good power at the plate. He showed good balance and bat speed, along with a compact stroke from both sides of the plate. Defensively, he receives well and shows some arm strength and ability to catch and throw. Can continue to improve his exchange, but has shown ability to catch and throw on more than one occasion. Blocking is among his biggest areas for improvement.

11/04/2007 - College PREP - Tampa, FL Carlos has been to a lot of events and has shown improvement in every one. He is a strong defensive catcher with the right idea and is still young. Has arm strength and a quick release. Blocks ball well and recovers. Receives with soft hands. Left handed swing is much better then right. From the left side, shows a level balanced swing with power potential. Lower half works well. Right side tends to be a little uphill. Overall, Carlos should improve as he gets stronger and works on quickness. An interesting player.

10/10/2007 - Florida National Tournament - 2007 Leal is a solidly built young catcher with arm strength and power potential. Has room to improve his skills and mechanics, both behind the plate and with the bat. Transfer and footwork to throw, along with blocking skills need work behind the plate. With the bal, he needs to make sure to keep his swing short and to stay behind the ball better with his body. Overall, a good young man with a great attitude and a lot of ability to work with.

07/12/2007 - Cape Cod Training 2007 - Week 1 Carlos is an extremely talented young catcher. He has a great body with excellent arm strength. He is a switch hitting catcher with some pop. Work on quickness and developing a shorter stroke.

12/27/2006 - Christmas Camp and Tournament - 2006 Leal showed balance, bat speed, and barrel accuracy at the plate. Needs to take charge and be a leader.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
