Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 3B/RHPPosition Projection

01/13/2012 - 2012 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament Carson showed exceptionally well at both 3B and on the mound at the Pre-Season. Defensively, Carson has quick feet, soft / sure hands, and very smooth actions. He has a clean glove, good footwork, and he fields out in front of his body. Carson has a clean exchange, and throws with big league life and carry across the diamond. On the mound, Carson touched 92 mph showing sound mechanics and a long / loose arm action. He keeps a still head, works in good rhythm, and he throws on a downhill plane. At the plate, Carson has good balance, a solid base, and explosive bat speed. He is a strong hitter with a quiet head, a level swing, and he can work the ball to all fields.

08/13/2011 - Under Armour All-America Game 2011 Carson Kelly (#13) started the game at 3B, and took the mound in the 7th inning. While his stock appears to be higher as a position player, he would likely gather a lot of draft attention were he just a pitcher. Power, field and arm are plus tools, with the hit tool close behind. His arm strength across the infield was impressively easy, while the leverage in his swing allowed him to generate what looked like effortless bat speed and raw power. His fastball reached 92 in a steady rain, and went with an upper 70s slider that flashed depth. Carson was an Under Armour Pre-Season All American from 2009 to 2011, and also attended the Team One Futures Game West in 2010. As of the publishing of this article, he has yet to commit to a college. Carson won the Kelly Kulina Award, named in honor of the late Baseball Factory team member, based on his demonstration of the most heart and enthusiasm during the week.

01/14/2011 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America - 2011 Carson is a tremendous two-way athlete who was also a member of USA Baseball's 16U Gold Medal winning team last year. On the mound Carson pounds the zone with a heavy high 80s fastball and has more in the tank. He complements that with a sharp breaking ball that has good tilt and is a swing-and-miss pitch and a developing change-up. At the plate, Carson uses his strong build to generate bat speed in a powerful stroke. His approach is quiet and rhythmic - something you usually see in hitters much further along in their careers than Carson. The ball is loud off his bat and he has some loft power. In the field his athleticism allows him to make all the plays at 3B and he has plenty of arm for that spot. Overall, Carson is one of the country's top 2-way talents.

10/22/2010 - Team One Futures Game 2010 - WEST Carson has a tall athletic frame standing at 6'1/180. Defensively he showed good rhythm and quick feet. His throws are on target with loose arm action. He has soft hands and moves through the baseball very well. At the plate, he has quick direct hands and gets great extension. He has good barrel accuracy and good bat speed. He has good balance and showed gap to gap power. On the mound, Carson throws from a ' arm slot with loose arm action. His fastball velocity ranged from 88-89mph with good movement. His breaking ball ranged from 73-75mph and buckled hitters. He keeps his shoulders square and is a strike thrower. Carson has a great chance to be a two-way player at the next level.

07/17/2010 - College PREP - Costa Mesa (Los Angeles), CA Carson is a strong, long, loose, athlete with good skills at 3B and on the mound. Defensively, Carson moves well laterally, has soft / playable hands, and he fields the ball cleanly. He is best suited for 3rd base, with his strong / accurate arm across the diamond. Defensive abilities can get even better if Carson can lighten his feet and take better angles to the ball. On the mound, Carson has a fastball that touches 88 MPH, that he delivers on a slight downward plane. He has good direction toward the plate, nice front side lead, and he aggressively attacks hitters. Carson has solid off-speed pitches and he is able to maintain his velocity from the strength position. Improved overall command will help Carson's game reach the next level. At the plate, Carson attacks the ball aggressively and has good bat speed. He gets to a good launch position, he centers the ball well, and the ball jumps off of his bat. Carson has pop in his bat to the pull side, and if he can shorten his stroke and work the ball to all fields, solid offensive grades can get even better.

01/15/2010 - Under Armour Pre-Season All-America - 2010 Carson showed very well at 3B and on the mound during his time at the UA Preseason All-America. He is a young, lean, athletic player, with very good baseball skills. At 3B, Carson has good hands and feet, and he presents his glove well. He fields the baseball out in front of his body and he has a clean exchange from glove to hand. Quicker actions will help Carson's overall infield skills get even better. On the mound, Carson's FB touched 87 MPH, and he has a clean, 3/4 arm action. His mechanics are sound, he gets good extension, and he lands softly. Carson has good mound presence and pitchability. Offensively, Carson has good balance and bat speed. He has a quiet approach, gets good extension, and he can hit to all fields. The ball comes off Carson's bat well, and with a shorter stroke, we could see hitting grades further improve.

06/28/2009 - Team One West 2009 - PVP Carson is a young, athletic, projectable player that showed well at our west coast showcase. On the mound he did well showing a decent fastball that had some sinking movement. He worked to pitch to the corners, but still needs to pitch there with better consistency. Carson did a very good job displaying his offensive talents, showing a short stroke and good bat-speed. He was consistent in hitting the ball where it was pitched, even though his stride direction is to the open side of the diamond. By correcting his stride direction, Carson is also likely to hit the ball with more authority to the opposite field. Defensively, he also does well in being athletic on his feet, and showing good glove skills. He sometimes will hesitate on his reads off the bat, but makes up the ground with a low approach. Overall, Carson is a good player, that will continue to develop, but will most likely shine as a hitter.

01/16/2009 - Under Armour Pre-Season All America - 2009 Carson is a very young arm with a nice delivery and a clean arm. Fastball sat in the 76-77 range but touched 81 at this event. Throws two breaking balls, both with tight rotation. The slider has the best bite right now. Has an ok feel for a changeup that sinks as well. Direction is consistent and balance and extension are solid. Has a lot of time to improve and already shows a feel for delivery and stuff. Also shows a good feel behind the plate. Body works well on throw and has a nice arm stroke. Exchange can quicken. Eyes the ball well and has good lateral range. Needs to relax elbow on the catch. Loads up fine with the bat. Has good batspeed and needs to continue to gain a feel for the barrel. Will be fun to watch over the next four springs.

11/16/2008 - College PREP - Monmouth, OR Carson is a very young, 2012 two way player on the mound and at C with a tall, thin body that shows future projection as it continues to physically mature. He does project well at both positions showing above average abilities. Foot speed is average and will improve age. He utilizes his feet well throw the throwing process but he needs to work more directional to his target. Arm strength is above average displaying life, carry, and accuracy. He will benefit by getting on a strict long toss to aid in building more arm strength and lowering pop times. Receiving skills are above average with a soft glove action that works well around the baseball. Blocking skills are solid average as he utilizes his body well. He would benefit from some instruction in improving blocking skills. At the plate, abilities are above average with near above average power. He has a solid base allowing his hands to work direct and through the baseball at contact. Bat speed is a plus and he shows a solid feel for the barrel. Power numbers will increase as more body strength is gained. On the mound, Kelly has a lot of potential ability. He utilizes his tall frame to work on a strong downhill plane creating plus angles with his fastball. Breaking ball is near above average displaying an 11/4 shape with loose spin and appears sliderish. Changeup is solid average showing a solid feel with sinking action. He throws a split finger in which he drops arm slot. Would recommend bagging the split pitch until arm strength fully develops. With 4 years to continue to develop, Carson has the makings to be a special type player and draft pick in 2012. It will be fun to follow and watch him continue to develop.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
