Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • RHP/3BPosition Projection

08/30/2009 - College PREP - Nashville, TN Wilkins shows solid, steady play in his baseball abilites displaying as a two-way player. Defensive abilities at 3B are solid as his hands and feet work well together through the fielding and throwing process. Feet are active and aggressive in coming to get and playing through groung balls. His throws show carry and accuracy across the diamond. At the plate, Chase improved his power numbers, now showing solid average as the baseball jumps off his bat when centered. On the mound, fastball showed a range fo 77-79 mph and was sneaky quick. We have seen better velos. Off speed pitches are solid average and have potential to be quality pitches at the next level.

07/21/2009 - Cape Cod Training 2009 - Week 3 Chase continues to show steady improvements in his baseball abilities. Currently, he projects best on the mound for the next level. Fastball showed a range of 81-84 mph on a downhill plane that creates tough angles on hitters. Off speed speeds show potential to be quality pitches for the next level. At the plate, hitting abilities are solid average as he shows strong hands with plus bat speed. Swing path is short and direct to the baseball. He makes plays at 3B but projects best on the mound where he will get looks from the collegiate coaches.

12/27/2008 - Christmas Camp and Tournament - 2008 Wilkins improved his 60-yard dash, from 7.79 down to 7.66. In addition, he nudged his top end fastball velocity up from 82 to 83. He did a good of throwing his fastball and breaking ball around the plate. Has some room to improve his delivery and arm action to potentially find better stuff. Tended to land short with his stride leg, and spun off to the first base side - needs to take better advantage of his good sized frame and drive down the slope of the mound towards the plate. He broke his hands late and had some late stab action out of the glove, this forced him to rush his arm behind him - as a result, he tended to drag his arm behind his body. Needs to give his arm a chance to work behind him, in order to get in a better spot in front of him at release. At the plate, he showed some strength and ability to drive the ball to the pull side. Defensively, he was solid at third base and also showed he could play first base. Has more value on the mound at this point, where he also has better future potential.

11/16/2008 - College PREP - Shreveport, LA Chase is a young two way player on the mound and a 3B with a tall, strong looking body that does show projection as it continues to physically mature. Currently, he does project best on the mound where he has abilities. Arm strength is solid average and needs to get on a strict long toss program to aid in building more arm strength and raise in velocities. Fastball shows solid glove side run. Breaking ball is best off speed pitch displaying a 10/5 shape with loose spin. Changeup is near average. Off speed pitches do need further development to be effective pitches at the next level. He throws strikes and is around the plate with all pitches. Defensive abilities are near above average. Foot speed is below average but feet are playable. He comes gets ground balls, playing through with his feet and hands. Glove action is soft and sure. His throws displays carry and accuracy across the diamond. At the plate, Wilkins has near average ability and power. Bat speed is present and makes consistent contact. He does have some flaws in his approach hindering him reaching his maximum potential. Hitting and power grades will improve quickly with some instruction and adjustments at the plate. Chase has abilities with time and room to continue to improve, especially on the mound.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
