Official Scouting Report

  • C/1BPosition Projection

01/16/2009 - Under Armour Pre-Season All America - 2009 Christian showed slightly above average ability behind the plate. Did not showcase as well as we've seen him in the past. Feet work in line, but his arm and overall quickness were not as strong as in previos events. Has good rhythm at the plate and generates some batspeed—solid life in his barrel. Tends to muscle up. Also needs to get his stride foot down earlier. 2 for 6 with 2 walks, and a double in tournament games. Strong bodied kid with strong offensive tools.

07/19/2008 - College PREP - Plymouth Meeting (Philadelphia), PA Christian got on a stretching program and improved his flexibility, which showed in his stance and blocking technique. Continues to show arm strength, consistently in the low 1.9s and very accurate. We saw him in games and his tools carry over. Has presence behind the plate and is learning to call a game. In BP he cut some balls in half. Has bat speed, level stroke, gets good extension, holds the ground and has a repeatable swing. The ball jumps off his bat. Joest also has aptitude, was able to learn things on the spot and transfer them into the game. He continues to improve and will be a fine college player.

06/14/2008 - ACR-E - Maryland - 2 Joest improved his 60 time and receiving grades. He continues to show athleticism and raw ability. Needs to get some flexibility in the lower half to help with blocking and footwork. Arm strength and technique is there he just needs the flexibility to utilize his strengths. Showed his power at the plate, with some instruction he will have more consistency. Has tremendous make up and work ethic, with some polish he will fit in nicely behind the plate.

04/27/2008 - College PREP - Farmingdale, NY Christian is big and strong with athleticism. He has raw ability and with some instruction will improve quickly. Runs well, has arm strength, and power, has all the makings of a solid catcher. Had a quick exchange and showed life in his arm. Throws were on a downward plane with good backspin. Needs to work on his stance and balance while throwing and receiving. Blocked well, had life in his body and was quick to recover, but again needs body control and must not use his hands to get up. With his athleticism he will not have a hard time making these changes. At the plate he showed bat speed and the ability to center balls. Again he has raw strength and with some polish will be a fine addition to a college program.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
