Official Scouting Report

  • 1B/LHPPosition Projection

12/27/2018 - Under Armour Baseball Factory Recruiting Classic (Ages 14-18) Clay has made impressive strides in his game, increasing his raw velocity from 81mph to 87mph and showing much improved secondary pitches. He is a valuable defender at first with the footwork and soft hands to work around the bag and receive throws. He is athletic and has clean hands to field and get rid of the ball with carry and accuracy. At the dish, he has a compact, powerful swing to impact the ball and show power potential. He loads to a power position and stays balanced throughout his swing to cover the entire strike zone. On the bump, he shows impressive command of his fastball to work ahead in the count and establish himself. He is fluid in his delivery and shows the same arm stroke for his secondary pitches and can keep hitters off balance. Further developing his secondary pitches will give him a mix of pitches that will be very tough to compete with. Clay is a strong prospect with lots of potential.

08/05/2018 - College PREP - Council Bluffs (Omaha), IA Clay is a lean, athletic LHP/1B who shows a bright future on the diamond with the makings of a special type player at the next level. Offensively, he has athletic/smooth actions with fluid rhythm to load. He gets good hand separation and delivers the barrel showing hard contact. Hands stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields with gap-to-gap pop. Defensive abilities are well above average as he displays smooth / fluid actions. Feet are aggressive as he attacks balls and plays through well with his body. Glove action is soft / sure and presents well out front. He moves well laterally and covers a lot of ground, displaying range (6.92 60 time). Hands / feet work well together as he gets rid of the baseball quickly with zip (87 mph velocity) to his target. On the mound, fastball showed a range of 78-81 mph. Breaking ball displays 2/8 shape with early break. Control is solid as he attacks hitters and throws strikes with all his pitches. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. With 2 years to further develop, Clay is a prospect on the field and will get looks from the collegiate coaches with his baseball abilities.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "present" abilities (tools), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year, using the scale below. However, grades 10-18 are not available for use with High School players (ages 14-18), while grades 55-70 are not available for use with Pre High School players (ages 12-14). These instances are marked as "--- N/A ---" in the "Description" fields below.
