07/31/2012 - Baseball Factory Select Training at Vero Beach (ages 12-14) Clay is pitcher/1B with the prototypical pitcher's build. Clay shows off his athleticism with soft and sure hands in the field. He gets to the ball with quick and active feet, but needs to work on fielding the ball more out in front of his body. His arm action is loose and makes solid, accurate throws. As a pitcher Clay loose throwing over the top LHP. He has a tall/controlled balance point and his separation has become on time and smooth. His fastball has a downward plane to it with a little late action. His curveball has a 2/8 shape with downward tilt and near fastball arm speed. Clay could create more explosion in his lower half and continue to long toss to help in his velocity numbers. At the plate Clay is a very balanced no stride hitter. He uses his lower half and backside well but leaks his front hip open too early, which elongates his swing. Overall Clay has good fundamental skills, a great attitude and strong work ethic. This combined with good baseball senses and awareness sets him up for a lot of success in the future.

05/26/2012 - Little League® Experience Clay is an athletic/tall/solid kid who plays 1B, OF and is a LHP. He has fluid arm action, above average arm strength, ball has carry, he has a quick release and he is accurate to his target. As an infielder Clay has an athletic fielding position, fields the ball out front, he uses two hands, hands are sure, his footwork is efficient and he takes good angles. As an outfielder his arm translates very well, he is athletic/quick and he is aggressive. He needs to take better angles in the outfield and throw to the proper bases. On the mound Clay showed good extension, a good finish and he throws strikes. He needs to smooth out separation, do not rush threw his balance point and work on his arm action (he wraps arm and is a little stiff). At the plate he displayed an athletic setup, sound load, short stride, centered balance, lower half gets through on a firm front side, timing is good, he has good rhythm and he makes hard/consistent contact fro an on-plane swing path. He needs to work on his finish, he has a tendency to finish too low. Clay is a very talented young player with a big upside. If he makes some adjustments and continues to work hard he will be a stand-out player in the future.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
