Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 1BPosition Projection

07/27/2012 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City Clayton Lieb is a 2016 graduate who plays 3rd base and also pitches. In the infield Clayton fields with 2 hands, has an athletic set up, and shows playable range. At the plate he has a squared set up, average bat speed for his age, and makes consistent contact. Would like to see him be more aggressive at the plate and want to hit because he makes solid contact when swinging at pitches in the zone. On the mound he has good composure and shows a lot of upside. He throws a fastball with some sink and a curve ball with good late movement. He gets good arm extension and has a controlled balance point. With more work and consistency, Clayton will be a great pitcher in the future.

01/13/2012 - Tampa Spring Training Clayton is a big/tall/solid 2016 graduate who plays 1B and is a RHP. His arm strength is well above average with short arm action and he is accurate to his target. In the infield Clayton displayed clean hands, active/efficient feet, a controlled approach and he fields out front. He needs to work on his footwork (both speed and agility) and quicken his exchange. On the mound Clayton has a big upside but he needs to speed up his delivery (tempo) and use his legs more. At the plate he uses his lower half but he has a tendency to collapse on the backside. his swing path needs to be on-plane (not uphill) and his timing is late. Clayton is a very coach-able kid with a lot of potential. If he can polish up his fundamentals and make the proper adjustments he should have a very successful career.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
