Official Scouting Report

  • LHPPosition Projection

01/13/2017 - Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament Clayton is a 2017 LHP with a projectable frame (6'1", 190 lbs). On the mound, this lefty shows a clean delivery and a great feel for pitching. His fastball tops out at 85mph with good arm side run. Breaking ball ranges from 66-69mph with 2-8 movement. Changeup sits from 70-72mph as he throws with fastball arm speed. Overall, Clayton is a talented prospect who has the tools that will play at the next level.

06/29/2016 - 2016 Under Armour Showcase: Baseball Factory's National West Clayton continues to show a big upside on the bump. He had a solid showing at the event. He attacks hitters, throwing a lot of strikes as he works to get ahead of hitters through a quick tempo. Fastball showed in the mid 80 range with arm side run. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for. Breaking ball displays 2/8 shape with late breaking action. Off speed stuff show as quality pitches that will get outs.

04/17/2016 - College PREP - Kentfield (San Francisco), CA Clayton continues to show a promising future on the diamond. He continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. On the mound is where he has improved the most. Arm strength is now outstanding as indicated by his top velocity of 84 mph. Fastball showed a range of 79-84 mph with arm side run and lots of movements. Breaking ball displays 1/7 shape with late / breaking action. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a plus feel for pitch with solid arm side run. Off speed stuff show as quality pitches at the next level. Control is well above average as he throws strikes with all his pitches, attacking hitters. At 1B, he shows a low approach and squares balls up with body. Hands are clean and he shows the ability to pick balls out of the dirt. Presenting his glove more out in front will help to avoid getting the ‘in between' hop. Continuing to increase foot quickness will aid in improving range. At the plate, he shows a squared setup. Hands are loose and work inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Swing path is level as he shows a line drive type approach, flashing gap to gap pop.

07/22/2015 - Under Armour Southwest Championships 16U, powered by Baseball Factory's Team One Clayton is a (5'10"/160) L/L 2-way player 1B/LHP. At 1B, he shows quick/active footwork moving well not he balls of his feet. He works from the ground-up, tracks the ball into his mitt and is sure handed. He moves well around the 1B bag and can make adjustments to inaccurate throws. With the bat, LH swinger shows a balanced approach with rhythm in his hands. He gets good separation with strong bat leverage and whips the barrel through the zone quickly. He extends through contact and drives the ball. Working to swing on a shorter/more direct path with more bat speed will result in increased power. On the mound, Clayton had 2 effective outings during the event. He has smooth separation as his arm works loose & clean. FB has slight sink still sitting in the upper 70's. He pounds the zone with strikes and challenges hitters. Breaking ball shows 2/8 shape with gradual action - complimenting his FB well. He finishes complete in an athletic position and fields the position well. Clayton has a great attitude and works hard every day. A 2017 grad - he has a ton of upside and will continue to progress.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
