Official Scouting Report

08/04/2013 - National Tryout - Dublin (Columbus), OH Ewing continues to make improvements to his game. On the bump, FB now tops out at 82 mph and shows run and cut. He works downhill and in-line toward the dish. He gets extension out over his front side and finishes in an athletic position. He fills up the zone and throws strikes with all of his pitches. Offensively, he shows a simple approach, tracking the ball into the zone and using the whole field. More lower 1/2 drive will help his power continue to climb.

11/08/2012 - Baseball Factory Training & Competition at Pirate City In Cody's most recent Factory outing he showed well in all aspects of his game. On the mound, he threw two pitches for strikes with his fastball's velocity hitting a new high of 78 MPH. His 12/6 curve-ball was a very effective pitch that he was able to throw for strikes. His delivery and control showed added improvement as he had decent front-side extension, a repeatable delivery, good balance, stayed in-line, and commanded his pitches. Cody also showed an ability to pitch up in the zone effectively. Cleaning up his arm action, utilizing his lanky frame-staying tall, using his lower half, striding further, and controlling his head will make him a more efficient pitcher. Defensively at first base, he takes good angles, makes plays, and makes accurate throws/double-play feeds from the 3/4 arm slot. Staying low to throw, being more fluid with his feet, and getting in a fielding position earlier will help increase fielding grades. Offensively, he has an athletic stance, loose grip, double-tap stride/load, barrel accuracy, and gets good extension through contact. At times, he is too tense, his arm bars, and the barrel drags. Overall, Cody projects best as a complete pitcher with a sound knowledge of the game.

07/09/2012 - College PREP - Cleveland, OH Cody is a tall, lanky RHP that will graduate in 2014. Delivery is sound / repeatable allowing his arm action to work loose / long to the plate. Fastball shows a range of 73-75 mph on a downhill plane. Breaking ball is best off speed pitch, displaying 11/5 shape with gradual break as he needs to create more extension out front. He slows his arm speed on his changeup, tipping off pitch to hitters and needs to develop more movement on pitch. Command / control are a plus as he throws strikes with all his pitches and changes speeds well. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is developed through a long toss program.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
