Official Scouting Report

  • Class Rating
  • 1B/3BPosition Projection

06/17/2017 - Omaha National World Series - Session 1 (Ages 14-18) Colbey is a hardworking 1B/3B prospect who has a strong, projectable build. As a right-handed hitter, Colbey has a square stance with a firm front side and centered balance. He has smooth rhythm with an open stride and tracks the ball well. Colbey has a direct, on-plane swing path producing consistent contact. He engages his hips and has the power to drive the ball to each gap. In the field, Colbey plays with active footwork and an aggressive approach attacking the baseball. He fields the ball in a square position and receives the ball with soft hands. Colbey throws from a high 3/4 arm slot and shows consistently accurate throws across the diamond. Overall, Colbey is a well-rounded prospect who has a good approach to the game and talent to take his game to the next level.

11/06/2016 - College PREP - Vinton (Roanoke), VA Colbey continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities. At 1B, defensive abilities have improved, displaying smooth/clean actions. He displays proper footwork around the bag and is a quality receiver. Hands are soft/clean and he presents well out front. Range will improve as he continues to increase foot quickness. At the plate he shows a squared setup. Hands are quick (83 mph exit velocity) and work through an aggressive swing path. He shows a feel for the barrel with power showing best to the pull side. On the mound, arm strength has improved, as he threw his top velocity to date, topping out at 69 mph. Fastball showed a range of 65-69 mph with tailing action. Breaking ball displays a 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup but needs to develop more movement on pitch. Building more arm strength through a long toss program will aid in further development on the mound.

12/12/2015 - Hitting Accelerated Training Weekend (Ages 14-18) Colbey starts from a balanced set up and works through a leg kick to trigger the lower half as the hands activate into a solid launch position. Colbey's swing path remains direct and compact as the hands attack the inside part of the baseball which allows for extension through the zone at contact. Colbey's approach allows him to hit the ball where it is pitched and use the whole field properly. A 2018 grad, Colbey shows that he has an idea at the plate and will benefit from focusing on a training program to increase his explosiveness and athleticism.

09/27/2015 - College PREP - Pittsburgh, PA Colbey showed the ability to throw strikes on the mound and showed some pop at the plate in Pittsburgh. At the plate, Colbey is an aggressive hitter with a square set-up and good bat speed. He uses his lower body well and has pop to the pull side. On the hill, Colbey gathers over the rubber well, has good direction toward home, and throws strikes with all of his pitches. He has a controlled landing, good break on his CB, and finishes in a good fielding position. At 1st base, Colbey moves with good body control to the ball, he fields out in front of his body, and he moves well around the bag.

07/25/2014 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City Colbey is a primary 1B that also pitches. At 1B, he fields the ball out front with sure hands, uses the proper footwork with his approach, and he is aggressive to the ball with good body control. He works well around the bag and understands proper positioning. At the plate he keeps a still head, has a level swing, and makes consistent contact. He has good barrel accuracy and can spray the ball to all fields. On the mound, Colbey showed good athleticism and a solid mound presence. He pounds the zone with his fastball and worked hard to get ahead of hitters. If he works to add some secondary pitches, Colbey will be a solid option on the mound at the next level. Colbey showed as a team player while at Pirate City.

03/30/2014 - Interactive Video Program - Washington (Pittsburgh), PA Colbey is a young, solid, 2-way player who plays 1B and RHP. Defensively, Colbey has good pre-pitch actions, he takes proper angles to the ball, and he plays under control. He has sure hands, a good backhand, and he throws with accuracy from a clean exchange to his target. On the mound, Colbey has good balance, solid direction toward home, and he competes in the zone with his pitches. At the plate, Colbey has loose hands, proper separation, and quick hands. He is quick to the ball, has good bat speed, and he makes solid contact. Colbey can improve his overall abilities with work on the following.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
