01/16/2009 - Under Armour Pre-Season All America - 2009 Colby is a two way player on the mound and in the OF with a solid body that does show projection as it continues to polish and firm up. He did not work out in the OF but does project well on the mound where he has an upside. Arm strength is at pro level as indicated by his top velocity with a comfort zone of 91 mph. Fastball is heavy and shows on a downhill plane, creating tough angles for hitters. He locates his fastball to both sides of the plate. Breaking ball is well above average showing as a quality pitch at the next level while displaying tight spin with plus hard, late break. Changeup is solid average showing a feel for and flashing potential. Delivery is smooth and repeatable showing loose actions through his mechanics. Command and control are above average as he attacks hitters. At the plate, Holmes has above average ability and power. He shows strength in his swing as the baseball jumps off his bat when centered. Bat speed is a plus and maintains through the point of contact. He has abilities to hit at the next level. Colby has the makings to be a dominant pitcher at the next level and should be a draft guy.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
