Official Scouting Report

  • 3B/RHPPosition Projection

07/11/2017 - Cape Cod Select Training & Competition - Session 1 (Ages 14-18) Cole is a 5'9/135 lbs infielder and pitcher who has shown significant improvements as of late. At the plate he showed the ability to hit line drives and make consistent contact. He used an athletic setup and a short, fluid stride to produce quick bat speed through the zone. Learning to incorporate and fire his backside will help Cole hit balls harder and increase power. In the infield, Cole displayed athletic movements and fielded balls out in front creating an efficient exchange. His throws were accurate and arm action was short and quick. On the mound, Cole threw exclusively from the stretch from a 3/4 arm slot and showed an increase in his fastball velocity. He showed some arm side run on his fastball and good rotation on his breaking ball, while having the ability to command both pitches. With added strength and maturity, Cole will continue to be an exciting two-way prospect to follow.

01/15/2016 - Baseball Factory Spring Training in Arizona (Ages 14-18) Cole Burney is a 5'7/130 lbs 3B/RHP that will graduate in 2019. Offensively, he showed good separation to get his body into position to hit and had good rhythm through his process to hit. He rotated his core nicely to help generate bat whip and with continued lower half focus will increase his hard contact frequency with greater barrel accuracy. At the hot corner, he makes plays with soft hands and efficient footwork. He was quick to release the ball and had nice footwork around the bag. He worked on his pre-pitch footwork and worked on gaining ground laterally with a strong lower half to throw. On the mound, he threw a FB and spun a 12/6 CB for strikes. He gathered himself over the rubber to balance and give way to his delivery. More rhythm to deliver pitches with his entire body synced will boost velocity and effectiveness. All in all - Cole is an athletic player that needs to continue working on his body control and strength to see improvements to his fundamentals.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
