08/02/2015 - College PREP - Council Bluffs (Omaha), IA Cole continues to show improvements in his baseball abilities with a promising future on the diamond. Foot speed has improved as he ran his best 60 time to date, now a solid runner at 7.38. He utilizes his quick / athletic feet well in working in line to his target through a clean transfer / exchange as he get rid of the baseball quickly. Pop times have improved as he threw his lowest time to date at 1.90. Throws display life, accuracy and on line carry as he will control the running game with his feet and arm. At the plate, hands are quick and work inside the ball as he utilizes all fields. Lower half works well through the swing and he has strength in his swing.

08/03/2014 - College PREP - Council Bluffs (Omaha), IA Cole continues to shine on the diamond. Behind the dish, he shows athletic actions getting around pitches in the dirt quickly and centering the ball off of his chest. Exchange is quick as he puts his throws on the bag (1.95). With the bat, this RHH maintains strong bat leverage delivering the barrel to and through the zone quickly. The ball jumps off of his bat as he uses the whole field. Cole will make things happen when he steps onto the field.

01/20/2014 - National Tryout - Omaha, NE Cole has molded himself into quite a prospect behind the dish. This right-handed hitter stands in well with good balance and a solid base. He gets back into a strong loaded position and has good bat leverage, driving the barrel down to and through the zone. Barrel delivery is short/compact as he hits line-drives. Behind the dish, Johnson has athletic actions and shows good flexion. He has a clean exchange and gets the ball to 2B quickly. A smooth swinging catcher - only a 2016 grad - has a bright future in the game.

11/18/2012 - College PREP - Des Moines, IA Cole is a young C/RHP that will graduate in 2016. Behind the plate, feet are active as he works in line through a clean transfer / exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Pop times show a range of 2.25-2.35 with accuracy on his throws. Times will continue to drop as he continues to build more arm strength through a long toss program and improves foot quickness. Receiving / blocking skills show as playable tools that will play well at the next level as he continues to improve. At the plate is where Johnson shows best through an athletic setup with rhythm. Hands are quick, flashing bat speed and works through a direct / level swing path as he makes consistent contact. Barrel accuracy is a plus with the baseball jumping off his bat when centered. On the mound, fastball shows a range of 71-74 with arm side run. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He slows his arm speed on his knuckle ball, tipping off pitch to hitter, but displays solid run / sinking action. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as more arm strength is gained. With 4 years to further develop, Cole has a lot of potential and will catch the eyes of the collegiate coaches as he continues to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
