Official Scouting Report

  • OF/RHPPosition Projection

12/27/2015 - Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City - Session 2 Coltin is a 6'2/165 lbs OF/RHP that showed his best strengths offensively at the Baseball Factory Christmas Camp & Tournament at Pirate City. In the box, he got himself in a good position to hit, and worked his hands and hips together to get the barrel through the zone. He flashed decent pop and worked out front getting good top-hand extension with the barrel through the zone. During cage sessions, Coltin worked to get his lower half more engaged in his stance, and also worked to stay more compact with his barrel delivery. In the OF, he took good routes and was efficient with his footwork and controlled with his body to get into his fielding position. His glove played sure and he worked behind and through the ball to throw with his body momentum. On the mound, Coltin threw a FB and an 11/5 CB with medium break - both for strikes. He worked on a downhill plane with a good tempo, and got outs by mixing pitches and keeping hitters off balance. Overall - Coltin is a team player that works hard and has the passion to play the game at a high level.

09/27/2015 - College PREP - Pittsburgh, PA Coltin is a lean, tall OF/RHP that will graduate in 2017. Fastball shows a range of 70-74 mph. Breaking ball displays 11/5 shape with gradual break. He maintains arm speed on his changeup, showing a feel for with cutting action. Off speed stuff show potential as being quality pitches at the next level. Control is outstanding as he throws strikes with all his pitches, attacking hitters. Stock on the mound will continue to rise as he builds more arm strength through a long toss program. In the OF, he takes proper routes/angles in tracking down balls through an aggressive approach. He reads balls well off the bat with defensive grade improving as he works to get behind balls more to play through with momentum to his target. At the plate, he shows an open setup and tracks the ball well. Hands are aggressive and work through a level swing path. He makes consistent contact, mainly to the pull side. Hitting grade will continue to improve as he works to keep hands inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Power numbers will increase has works to utilize his lower half more aggressively. With 2 years to further develop, Coltin has abilities with time and room to continue to improve.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
