08/06/2012 - Baseball Factory National World Series at Pirate City - Session 2 Corey showed well defensively during his time in Pirate City. Behind the plate, Corey has quick / fluid actions, he looks the ball in, and he blocks well. He follows his throws and delivers the ball with accuracy and some carry to his target. He showed good pop times in Pirate City (2.1 seconds) that were consistent with his initial workout with us earlier this year. Offensively, Corey has good balance, a proper load, and a rhythmic swing. He keeps his head on the ball and makes consistent contact. He can work on keeping his hands back and not too high. Corey is a very hard worker and has a great attitude. He will be a great addition to a college team.

04/29/2012 - College PREP - Ashburn (DC), VA Corey is an athletic C/OF that will graduate in 2013. Currently he projects best as a catcher for the next level, but he showed well in the outfield as well. As a catcher, his feet are quick and aggressive as he works in line through a quick transfer / exchange as he gets rid of the baseball quickly. Pop times show a range of 2.09-2.25 with accuracy on his throws. Times will continue to drop as more arm strength is developed through a long toss program. Receiving / blocking skills show as quality tools through an athletic setup that will play well at the next level. In the OF, feet are aggressive as he takes proper routes / angles in tracking down balls. He moves well laterally, flashing range but needs to work on getting behind balls more to play through with momentum to his target to continue to improve defensive grades. At the plate, Phillips continues to shine through a squared / solid setup. Hands are quick, generating bat speed to and through the ball. Swing path is level as he works to stay inside the ball, utilizing all fields. Barrel accuracy is a plus with the baseball exploding off his bat when centered. Corey has a lot of potential with the makings to be a solid collegiate player as he will get looks from the collegiate coaches.

Tool Grade Scale

Our main goals with the BF "10-70" Scouting Scale are to provide the player with a realistic evaluation of his "PRESENT" abilities (what he can do today), and to provide college coaches with information they can use to identify and/or compare potential recruits.

Tools are graded for all players and pitchers, regardless of age or graduation year. However, for High School players we use only grades 20-70 (grades 10-18 do not apply), while for Middle School players we use only grades 10-52 (grades 55-70 do not apply).
