03/04/2012 - College PREP - Indianapolis, IN
Craten showed similar abilities in Indy as he did in previous workouts. He is a thin, athletic OF with firm hands and active feet. He is aggressive to the ball, he has a low approach, and he takes proper angles. Craten has a quick 1st step, he stays behind fly balls well, and he throws with a short arm action with average strength. More crow hop and added arm strength can help defensive abilities improve. At the plate, Craten has a crouched stance, a short stride, and okay bat speed. He makes square contact, he keeps his head still, and he swings in good rhythm. Added bat speed and more lower 1/2 can help hitting numbers spike.
09/04/2011 - National Tryout - Indianapolis, IN
Craten continues to show solid abilities in all aspects of his game. He really improved his running times in the sixty along with his home to first time. His defensive grades and arm strength also took positive steps with his arm strength jumping 5 mph from his previous workout. He shows good quickness in the outfield taking good angles and being sure handed when fielding. At the plate he showed similar numbers with a middle of the field approach, good use of his lower half and a level swing path. Overall strength and maturity will continue to improve his bat speed and power which will improve his overall hitting evaluation.
12/27/2010 - Christmas Camp and Tournament 2010 - Session 2
Craten is a young (2013) OF with a thin, wiry frame that shows projection as he continues to physically mature and fill out. Foot speed is above average as indicated by his 7.20 60 time as he utilizes his feet well in taking proper routes / angles in tracking down balls in the OF. He needs to work on getting behind balls more to play through with momentum to his target. He shows good instincts in the OF and reads balls well off the bat. Throws are accurate but must get on a long toss program to aid in further developing more arm strength with carry. Offensively is where Brown shows best as he displays solid average abilities and power. He shows a balanced approach and tracks the ball well. Hands are quick, generating bat speed and he shows a solid feel for the barrel with ball jumping off his bat when centered. Power numbers will continue to improve as he learns to stay back and transfer weight properly through the lower half. At the event, he was 4 for 9. Mental makeup is a plus as is very coachable, willing to work and learn to be the best he can be as he plays with high energy. With 3 years to further develop, Craten has an upside with time and room to improve.
